Kefir Help

Thread Starter
I mentioned to a friend my interest in ordering kefir grains and making my own milk kefir, and today she showed up to our BF support group with a cup of kefir that her friend poured from her own stash!
I now have this cup in my fridge and I have no idea what to do with it!!

I know that she just poured from her main batch this morning and that she uses raw goat's milk; from what I understand she just added the new milk to the grains today. How should I store it? Can I start drinking it now? How do I "harvest" some to make new batches and when should I do that? How long is it good for?

I plan to read through old threads this evening and read up on this some more, I just wasn't expecting to start so soon! I am a big time researcher, so being unprepared freaks me out
TIA for any info you can give me! You ladies are so knowledgeable!! I have a lot to learn!!!

ETA: Ok, DD is taking a nap, so I had some time to read up on kefir. The jar is sitting on top of the fridge now, I plan to strain it tomorrow. Now my main question is...if I don't have access to goat's milk, can I add cow's milk to the freshly strained grains tomorrow?

Yes, add any type of milk to the grains, leave in cupboard for 48 hours, strain and drink. Repeat. (assuming no IgE to milk)
