Chicago area Medicaid mamas, please help!

I need to find a new pediatrician for my daughter and we're on Medicaid. Does anyone have a recommendation for me? The last doctor we saw said avocado was too "exotic" to be feeding a 9 month old baby. I will drive pretty far to see a good doctor.

Unfortunately, it seems 'good' doctors that will take medicaid are few and far between. Have you checked the states website, Illinois Heath Connect? You can search for doctors there.

On the North Side, the Ravenswood Family Practice was pretty good. They have plenty of ODs, they can split up the MMR if that's the route you're going, and the physicians we saw were always respectful of our choice not to vax.

Since moving to the burbs, I've found the IHC website very unhelpful. Many of the practices listed were not accepting new medicaid patients, some had been closed for years, etc. Luckily I found the right practice for us through a recommendation from another mama.

My son sees Dr. Peter Grant at the Oak Park Hosp Prof Building. 708-524-1747
He does the delayed vax schedule and has let us skip certain vaccines. He is against co-sleeping. Even if he disagrees with you he will listen to you respectfully. It is so hard to find someone who takes medicaid so I just stay with him.

I have been going to MJ Medical group, a family practice. I am supposed to have Dr Melissa Clark as my doctor but every time they just schedule me with the nurse practitioner which I don't mind that much since I like her. She is not too fast to prescribe anti bionics and told me it really wasn't a big deal to feed my 9 mo old many solids since we nurse a lot. I don't vacc, she recommended doing some, but respected that I didn't want to at that time. The office is well organized.

We love Mariela Cano in Ravenswood (and I know quite a few other MDC mamas do as well...) She is very respectful about parents choosing to not vax, avoid antibiotics, seek homebirth, etc. In fact, I believe she herself had at least one homebirth and practiced extended breastfeeding w/ her own kids. A totally cool woman... and the practice accepts Medicaid.

The Child and Adolescent at Northshore University Hospital (formerly Evanston Hospital) is pretty top-notch. We've received excellent service and care. I consistently get in the next day for sick visits, though sometimes they have been booked solid and I've been asked to take them to the ER. The attendings are the hospitalists or private pediatricians who work in the clinics. They do not require vaxs; individual pediatricians there are more friendly with non-vax than others. I'm confident advocado would not be considered too exotic. Goodness!

i second this - we've always had a good experience here. they actually have a lactation consultant on staff who can see clients of this office for no additional fee, including medicaid patients. that puts them in my good book for sure!

Thank you so much for your help! I completely forgot I made this thread. I started going to see the doctors at the Swedish Covenant Family Care Center for myself based on a rec in another crunchy local forum, and made an appointment for my daughter for her 1 year check up. I liked them for me, but we'll see how I like them for her. If I don't feel like we click, I'll definitely be hitting up some of your suggestions!
