Any dangers with Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle?

My baby girl is now 6 weeks old, and we have been doing exclusive breastfeeding from the start. All is well, weight checks very good, etc. I wouldn't say things are perfect, but no roadbumps we haven't been able to handle so far.

But recently, I got worried about my milk supply. This was mainly triggered by my baby's recent pattern of freaking out after some feedings. Sometimes she was probably gassy, or tired, but sometimes it seemed to me she was hungry and wanted more milk that was not coming. Thus the worries about supply.

I know, I know....so many moms have these worries because you can't see how much the baby is drinking, and all I have read and heard says just trust it because the baby is getting what she needs if the diapers are fine and weight is fine. I realized it was probably a normal growth spurt.

Still, I couldn't leave well enough alone and decided to go and start taking Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle, figuring a little boost couldn't hurt.

Am I right on this? Dr. Newman's website (or some other source I can't recall) refers to the herbs as harmless. The only danger I see would be ending up with too much supply and engorgement issues. If I am careful with that, I can't see any other issues.

As it is, it does seem to have helped boost production, and baby girl seems more satisfied more often. I'm also taking only a 1/2 dose. Thoughts? Anyone see any problems? Thx!!

I don't know much about the supplements, but I do know babies go through a growth spurt around 6 weeks and nurse more frequently to build up your supply. I'm sure thats all it is, but I'm sure someone else can let you know about the supplements too.

Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle have been used for a very long time to increase milk production. I started taking Fenugreek and Alfalfa (which has similar qualities to Blessed Thistle but, IMO, is a bit more mild and produces richer milk) at two weeks and have noticed no ill effects except that I smell a bit like maple syrup.

I think the herbs are in the "can't hurt, might help" family. I know Susun Weed recommends them, as did my midwife. I do think they increased my milk production and as I said, I haven't read or heard of any adverse issues with them.

And I also agree with the PP that there is a growth spurt around 6 weeks so perhaps your LO is just needing more and is working to create that.

Fenugreek can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) so may be a problem for a diabetic - and I think there are contraindications if the person has a bleeding disorder too. Kellymom has a good section on herbs (www.kellymom.com) and Dr. Hale's book may have something too.

The only danger I know of is that you can't take fenugreek if you have a peanut allergy - fenugreek is in the same family as peanuts.

I also take both with no problems.... they help tremendously, as does brewers yeast.
