No one wants to burn their bun in the oven!

I use my oven quite a bit. It's an older model from the 80's, electric. From the beginning when we bought this house 3.5 years ago it always ran a little hot but, nothing a little adjusting couldn't fix. But, it seems to be getting worse.

EX: One year ago, if I was baking a cake that said to bake at 350 for 32-36 minutes I would have set the heat a tiny bit below 350 and baked for 28 minutes. Today I set it even more below 350 than I would have a year ago and only baked for 24 minutes. At first, making these adjustments wasn't a big deal. It was second nature to me and I always made sure to check up on my baked goods while they cooked. Now, it's just annoying. It seems to have gotten exponentially worse in the last few months. I try to tweak things and stay ahead of the ever increasing oven temps but the last few weeks it seems to be getting ahead of me.

Is this my oven's way of saying it's on it's way out? Is there something I'm missing or could be doing to prevent this from continuing to get worse? I hit freecycle and the free and appliance section on craigslist pretty often but, not finding much that looks like it will be any better. Having an old appliance is sort of like having an old car. You know they have problems but, having problems you know is often times better than buying something that appears better but may have problems you're not familiar with.

I also have an old oven. If I have to cook something at 375, I have to set it at 300. At least the broiler element doesn't come on anymore...

Is the knob just getting off? Like, when you turn it to "off", is it at the same spot on the knob or is it slowly drifting to the left?

One thing that we did was get an oven thermometer. It's helped immensely.

Yep, I second the oven thermometer. If I'm cooking something that is sensitive I set the knob and make sure the thermometer is at the temp I want for a little while before I put something in there. It also likes to randomly shoot up in temp periodically. My oven is also electric, athough it's from 1965... although it probably was a top of the line oven in it's day! I don't really think that the oven is necessarily on it's way out, just the temp sensor is old and crudy.

The thermostat in the oven is probably going out. This is fixable, but I have no idea where you can get a part for it. If you have a appliance repair shop in town, like an independent guy, not attached to an appliance store, they can probably fix in 30 mins for less than $100. Definitely cheaper than a new oven.

well it's good to know this isn't an early sign of oven death! Silly me, didn't even think of getting a seperate therm to sit inside the oven.

I'm still keeping my eye on craigslist for newer, cheapish ovens though.

The people who lived here before didn't take the best care of it. I've scrubbed and scrubbed and it's still ick. Burnt on junk everywhere inside, flat burners that are flush with the surface of the top of the stove. You know the kind.... the kind thats impossible to clean if no one has cleaned it in a long time.

Enough compaining out of it.

It also shocked me one time while burning my arm on the oven coils. Ouch.
