salmon roe.... :(

So I spent a relative fortune today at the fish market on salmon roe, two TINY containers for 8.50! I was hoping they would have undyed tobiko (I love tobiko or flying fish roe), but it was all dyed. the salmon was the only undyed roe, just salt cured in some way, so I figured I'd give it a try.

ewww. It is so fishy! I like fish, I've grown up eating fish, but it tastes overly fishy. Is there anything I can do with it to mask the fishyness?

Any ideas on where I can find other undyed roe? (I know its not in season, I'm just looking ahead mostly) (ideally tobiko since I know I like it). thanks!!

You can try soaking it... usually I'd say in milk, but I think that's not kosher.

You can also try cooking it in something like scrambled eggs with onion. Something strong enough to hide the strong flavors.

I'll give it a try soaking it in milk: fish is kosher with meat or dairy. Thanks.

hmmm onions might counter the flavor, I'll give that a try! Thanks

Eat it Japanese style with some wasabi!! The heat ought to distract from the fishiness a bit. Yum, now I wish I could get my hands on some!

I never thought about tobiko being dyed. You mean neon orange isn't its natural color?

I've seen un-dyed tobiko on sushi supply websites, you can get it shipped frozen overnight. It was a while ago, so I don't remember which site it was specifically, but I bet a search would turn it up. And yeah, it's natural color is pale yellow, IIRC, not anywhere near the bright orange you usually see.
