Pick my meyer lemons when they are light green?

I was just told this. I was told that once they are yellow - its too late.

Is this true?

No. I've never picked meyers green. If they're green they stay on the tree. Pick them when they're a lovely even yellow.

and how long does this normally take?
Just curious.
We have a fruit that is still definitely green that appeared sometime this spring.

Ours is usually ripe in Dec/Jan/Feb. It's usually staggered and I can leave ripe fruit on the tree for months after that. I had one lemon that stayed on for almost a year before it started to look shriveled!
