How many pregnancy no-no's do you ignore? - Page 5

I don't think there IS a "standard" list of nono's. I think it varies greatly based on location (US vs other countries for example). My midwife recommends raw milk, but I can't find any so I am not drinking it

I avoid tuna (but not completely), I have skipped sushi so far (but might indulge at some point), I don't drink alcohol or coffee at all (and coffee is not on my nono list but not to overindulge). My ob has alfalfa sprouts on the nono list. I had some yesterday on a sandwich. I don't eat raw meats. I avoid lunch meat during pregnancy due to nitrates (but again, not on my nono list).

I don't drink milk, so n/a on the raw milk. I have eaten raw cheddar though. And felt guilty, though I suffered no ill effects.

I would eat blue cheese if I had any around. Ditto for other soft cheeses.

I don't care for rare meat anyway, so no on that one. I love love love sushi, but I'm staying away more for the mercury and pcbs than any other reason. I've had california rolls for sure.

I haven't yet but I will have a glass of wine at Christmas and I will have champagne at New Year's. I'll be about 23 weeks then so I feel comfortable with it.

I drink coffee and/or tea every day. That is one that I probably should cut down on, but it's so hard for me.

I've been avoiding lunchmeat.

I really want to highlight my hair. It's so drab and awful. I am trying to wait, though. It will be a nice postpartum boost, I tell myself!

I guess in general I'm very cautious about these things in the first trimester and less so as the pregnancy progresses.

(Hmmm...it's lunch time, and now I want a turkey sandwich!)

I ignore the no-no's that are based on fear or the potential for bad handling when it comes to natural, healthy foods. I drink raw milk, eat blue cheeses (I just had some amazing risotto with cheddar blue cheese crumbles on top..mmmmmm!), don't really avoid sliced meats, I eat raw/undercooked eggs (we raise our own chickens), I eat rare meats, etc.

I do avoid tuna and other fish with potential high mercury levels, artificial sweeteners, artificial foods in general (but that is also when I'm not pregnant).

I try to avoid taking any meds unless critically necessary, which has never been the case.

I don't take a daily prenatal-I am very deliberate about what I eat and making sure I'm getting the nutrients I need.

I don't really drink alcohol when pregnant, but only because I always have a hard time keeping myself properly hydrated, and alcohol sets me back. I have been known to have a glass of champaign at special occasions while pregnant-after upping my water intake for the day to prepare.

I have to say, in the cases of women who don't educate themselves (or don't care) as to the "whys" behind restrictions in pregnancy, and what is and is not truly safe, I think the list of no-no's is a good one. But for women who are educated and know about proper nutrition and food handling practices, and are knowledgeable about where their food comes from, etc. I think it's totally acceptable to use their best judgement for what they do and do not allow for themselves in pregnancy.

Ugh, after posting about how I mostly disregard food "no no's", I came down with what we think was food poisoning or some other bacterial thing last week... no nausea but diarrhea and gas cramps that wouldn't go away and kept getting worse. I finally took an antibiotic (something I WOULD liked to have avoided) and all symptoms were 100% gone within 3 hours. Even when I took the medicine, I thought it was likely a viral thing, but it cleared up so quickly that I don't see how it could've been.
They had me go in for testing and to make sure the baby was fine (she seems to be) but it was scary having a cramping abdomen all weekend...
So, I stand by my "extreme food safety precautions" thing - all of the "no no's" come from wanting to avoid any risk of food borne diseases, but since I think got mine from vegetarian Indian food from a place I have eaten at many times, I am feeling much more paranoid about just knowing who has prepared my food and how, rather than what the ingredients are.
But then again - you can't worry about everything.

I still drink soda, y'all made me feel a lot better about it. I had a really terrible caffeine habit before I became pregnant, and it's just so hard to get through the day without it. I think if I wasn't in law school I would be a much better mom to be, but I feel like I'm coping as much as possible.

I love being able to tell my DH no Subway, though I just don't like that place...

No booze here. Mosty because dh would freak.
I eat sushi and meat not cooked well done.
I don't drink milk.
I've been eating a turkey sandwich from Subway about once a week.
I have drank regular caffeinated sodas, but just two or three times.

My biggest no-no is the quantity of fast food. I get crazy cravings for greasy things when I haven't gotten enough fat. Jack in the Box tacos are a favorite!

DP is a pescetarian so we have no meat in the house, only fish. So no rare meat or deli meat. However, I eat A LOT of fish and sea food. Cutting back on the tuna a bit, but not much else. I LOVE sushi, and am missing it. I wouldn't find it a big deal to indulge in a little raw sushi in the second trimester, but for now, that's out. Anything cooked, I'll eat of course.

I drink coffee. I can't do much more than a cup a day though, and I probably only drink it a few times a week. Tea is fine with me too.

No soda. Don't do it even when not pregnant. Same goes for artificial flavorings, colors, etc.

Avoid meds. I've been getting headaches, but a cup of coffee usually works for that. Although, I wouldn't feel guilty if I REALLY needed something.

Quit smoking cigarettes. (I have had an occasional drag, but the news is recent). I wouldn't be able to finish a cigarette even if I tried. It's just an impulse that my body tells me it's bad.

I'd have a glass of wine in the 2nd or 3rd tri. Accompanied by a hot bath, I could see it being really relaxing later on when the back aches start.

I'd trust my body in a hot tub to know when to get out. I wouldn't be cleaning any cat boxes if we had them, but mostly because I would be taking advantage of the 'out'.

Don't listen to exercise rules, just listen to my body.

Some of my own rules are:
-avoid greasy, fried, or fast food.
-prenatal vitamins daily.
-eat organic as much as possible.
-exercise on a daily basis.
-pregnancy stretches every day.
-meditation and relaxation for body and baby awareness.
-keeping stress at a minimum.
-drinking lots of water.
-getting as much sleep as my body asks for and NOT feeling guilty about it.

In the past, I followed all the rules, but I've done a lot more research since then and believe that breaking certain ones is actually healthy. Drinking raw milk is one of the biggest ones for me. I swear by my raw milk! Another rule I break is the heart rate rule. I'm a fitness instructor, so I'm used to a lot of hard physical exercise. If I kept my heart rate under 140, I would barely get warmed up, so I continue to exercise pretty hard, getting my heart rate up to about 85% or my max. I just make sure that I don't get overheated or go over 85% for more than a minute or so.

This whole no deli meat blows my mind!! This is my second pregnancy and I have not heard it yet from any Dr. My DD was thankfully born healthy because I know I ate deli meat A LOT during my first pregnancy. I have eaten it several times during this pregnancy too, YIKES!!! I am now wondering if that has had anything to do with the bleeding issues I have had?! I will be talking to my OB office tomorrow!!!

I live a healthy life to begin with and believe in everything in moderation. I don't believe in 'rules' for pregnancy, so I guess I don't follow any.

I always worried about the no-no's and would heat up my deli meat, and stopped eating at Subway.
I actually researched the Sushi one, and it's not actually a concern...just a myth. The thing is that fish is flash frozen before it is even sold to the sushi restaurant, so unless they have an incredibly disgusting kitchen (which sushi restaurants do not) then there is not risk...other than the high mercury amount, but that is also higher in swordfish etc.
I drink caffeine weekly in the form of Chai Tea Lattes from Starbucks (heaven in a cup) and eat quite a bit of dark chocolate.
I dont drink alcohol, and quit smoking as a teen.
But other than that, I eat everything in moderation, and am an 80% vegetarian...(more like 95% when not pregnant, but for some reason crave red meat when preggo....)

Also unless you insist that the sushi chef sanitize the knife between rolls eating cooked sushi is the same as raw.
