Which room to keep a bird in?

I'm considering getting a pair of small birds and wondering which room to keep their cage in. Any thoughts? Where do you keep yours?

I know they can be messy sometimes like if they go to the bottom of the cage and flap their way back upto a perch, all the feathers/dirt on the cage floor flies up into the air....so obviously the kitchen/dining areas are not a good idea incase it landed on food.

Birds are very social creatures, they should be kept in a room where they will get to spend lots of time around people. A living area is ideal, some place where you're family spends a lot of time. They are also susceptible to drafts, so you'd want to pick a location that is draft free, not near frequently use doors or windows etc. Also, you should know that non-stick cookware can give off fumes that can be highly toxic to birds, as can some household cleaners. For the cookware problem, its not enough to simply keep them out of the kitchen. Most bird owners choose to avoid teflon completely.

Depends on the type of birds.

We have two cockatiels, their cage is in the living room. They shed powder like crazy and coat everything in the entire house with the stuff. I am consdiering placing their cage in the garage! Just kidding....................

My sister has canaries and has their cages all over her house, including the kitchen (yech).

I agree with the pp's advice.

Teflon, hmmmm? Hey, Fred & Ginger (the cockatiels), want to move nearer the kitchen?

My parents have a parrot and a parakeet. They keep them in there office, but my parents spend a good amount of time in there office. The office is also very close to the living-room. So, when the door is open the birds can hear everyone. My parents keep them in the office so they can shut the door when need be. We live in FL and have a guy spray the house monthly (you really need to have this done here, unless you like aunts, spiders, and cockroaches in your house!) anyways, the chemicals in the spray are very bad for the birds, my Mom used to put the cages in the garage every month when the man came, now she just doesn't have that room sprayed and she leaves the door shut when he comes.

I agree that they should be kept where you often spend time. We've always put ours in the living room area. In fact my last budgie was pretty close to the dining room table for awhile and it was not a problem.

Oubliette has great advice. That's exactly what I would have said. Our house and windows are old and somewhat drafty so we kept our bird away from them.
