Overdyeing hideous orange purse

I saved up all my money awhile back and bought a Bayan Hippo purse on sale. Finally get it...it's fantastically hideously orange. I mean, hunter orange. I could stop traffic. It looked so pretty on the computer. I'm sure I couldn't resell it, but I was thinking of overdyeing it. I tie-dyed once about 2 years ago and have wool dyeing experience.

Would RIT dye work or since it's a finished product would it not turn out so well? Any natural dyes I could use? Would *anything* besides black, like maybe dark red, work to cover this?

it's cotton so should take dye fine. you could use any color to change it (not cover it). a cool color would bring it to a brownish place, even if the color were lighter and less intense than the orange. you know, it would either make it a duller orange or actually brown. or you could go with a darker warm color (brown, marroon, rust, pumpkin) which would give you more predictable results.

if you don't want to go very dark, you could try using rit color remover before dying it.

The best method to use would be a cold water dye method with fiber reactive dyes. SInce the fiber is cotton this is the best b/c of the ease of the process and the good results. RIT requires HIGH temps which could effect the structure of your purse, plus RIT gives crap results.

Doubledutch is right on about color.

Can you not return it and get another colour?

I'd have to pay shipping back to Turkey! So not worth my money to return it now.

Thanks for the tips. As soon as I get money, I'm going to have to do something.

Rit makes a dye remover that I've used before. I had some linen that was great, except for the puke green color. The color remover took it down to a kind of greyish yellow that was easier to over dye.
