Milk and Nutrition

My SIL called me today to ask about milk. She is currently nursing her ds (15 months) but would like to begin weaning at 18 months. She is concerned because everything that she has read says that he should drink at least 16 oz of milk per day to get all the vitamin D he needs. She has tried to give him milk and he refuses it.

Does anyone know if this is accurate? My gut tells me it isn't; but, I would love to find a few studies to back it up.

Well the vitamin D in milk is just added in there.May as well just buy a vitamin d supplement. We use the hylands D-drops. They're tasteless and 1 drop is all thats needed.

I live in Alaska and at our latitude getting the Vit D that you need from the sun only is not possible. Everyone has to take Vit D. My LO uses Carlson baby Ddrops.

I asked my LC if I needed to give her the Vit D while we vacationed (for 3 weeks) in Colorado and she said no as long as we are getting outside for 15-20 minutes per day. So my guess is that if your SIL's LO is getting outside, she probably doesn't need it. Sunscreen does affect Vit D absorption, but if the babe is getting out for a few minutes without s/he should be fine.
