This may be sort of a strange thought...

I have a 2 1/2 year old son and one on the way (due in Jan.) I tried to breastfeed my oldest, but due to having extreme gallbladder issues and having to alter my diet so drastically that my milk went away... I ended up having to formula feed. Well, now that my gallbladder with not be an issue this time around I plan to fully breastfeed. My son and I talk about how the baby will eat and such (He calls it "drinkin' nip-nip - how cute ) I'm just wondering....have there been any women who didnt BF a first child for whatever reason and then with their next breastfed the new baby AND then started to breastfeed the older child as well. I've just been thinking "what happens if my older one wants to *try BF?...or wants to taste it? Or likes it and wants to continue drinking it?" What I'm asking is would it be strange to start breastfeeding an older child who has never breastfed before? (not saying I will, just wondering)

I think if you're comfortable with it and it works for you, thats all that matters. My sister's little boy was 18 months when he weaned, due to the fact that she was pregnant and he didn't like the taste of her milk as it changed. After almost a year of not nursing, she has a 1 year old and he is now 3, he has started nursing again right along with the 1 year old. It works for them.

I only nursed DD1 for a few months. She was 2 1/2 when the twins were born, and she asked to nurse. I let her try it. She tried it twice, and then told me it was "yucky to drink your milk warm," and never wanted to try it again. I did sometimes pump a cupful for her (and chill it before she drank it!) especially when she was sick.

Just thread crashing to say that I think you are such a wonderful mama!!

If I was in your shoes, I'd let him know that if he'd like he can try to breastfeed too, or have some in a cup if he'd like a taste. He might be shy to ask, but if you offer he might open up about it.

You are so sweet.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I know that I def. want him to try it. Whether it be in a cup or breast. I just look at it this way. We drink milk from another species and no one makes anything of it. so what would be so wrong of him wanting to drink the milk that was intended for us all to drink? I'm sure if he starts to BF or just drink my milk in general i'll have some ppl make some comments (hopefully not, but probably...) so far my mother and sister seem to think its worth a shot. I actually hope he wants to drink it (even if it is from a cup).
