Longies for early and tiny baby

I knit DD3 a bunch of longies and did them in my standard format. Size newborn but with the lengths more that of the small size and for some reason a longer inseam (not normally part of the equation). My babies are small at full term and overdue.

DD3 came early and is super tiny. NONE of these longies are going to fit in the near future (my kids also don't grow fast). My shortest pair is the same length as her whole body!

I need a nice (and free) pattern for longies for a 5lber. We don't have an official weight yet but on our home scale (which is a fantastic liar ) she came in around 5-5.5 lbs. She's short too...only about 18-18.5 inches. She has no but so nothing crazy is needed in regards to shaping. I know I could just use my picky pants pattern and thinner yarn with no shaping but the rise is still likely to be a bit long and I don't want to muscle the brain power needed to tweak right now.

I've spent the last hour or so looking through preemie patterns but am not finding anything I like that has been used by a lot of people (that way I at least know it's decent enough the masses are using it ). She's still in preemie sposies right now so I'm not expecting her to fit in my newborn cloth yet. We live in a freakin' cold ass state though and seeing as 1. she was early and 2. I got rid of all my clothes and 3. they were the wrong season anyway being as I've had summer babies she needs some pants. My SIL lent me some of her preemie clothes but her baby was born in March so they aren't going to last too long in regards to warmth. I need something fast. This morning internet was down in the entire town because the freezing temps were so ridiculous last night we had an entire data center freeze.

I can run the calculations to adjust newborn sized PP for you if you can get me a waist and rise measurement, honey.

This has a waist measurement/co equation. You could maybe leave out the bootie short rows while dc is little.

When my preemies were super teeny tiny (and in the NICU) I spent many hours sitting next to the isolette, knitting preemie picky pants with DK weight yarn on size 5 ndls. They fit both my 5 pounders (actually, Rusty was 4 pounds 10 oz when he came home, IIRC) very well. I did the inseam length shorter, with no booty increases or short rows.

Would Cascade Quatro be a dk? It seems to thin to me be worsted.

flapjack that'd be awesome! I'll pm you later today for sure.

When my little ones were newborns I found it much better to put them in a wool sleep sack. If you make one that has an opening in the bottom, you can even change a diaper without waking up baby! It also helps keep legs warm because they get to touch, and they are a little freer. Plus, you don't have to use a blanket! I didn't use a pattern to make mine, I just knitted a tube with ribbing on the top and bottom. Here's the knit pattern that I based mine on http://withatangledskein.blogspot.co...leep-sack.html You can also make one larger and felt it, and there are a ton of other sleep sack styles that are a little more intricate/ornate if you want something more just google "wool sleep sack pattern" These are of course only good for at home. I did see a pattern that was more complicated but had a hole for the car seat buckle and a closed bottom. The other good thing is that you can use a too big diaper and not worry about having to stuff it in something.

my 33weeker was 4.8lbs and 18inches when she came home at 2 weeks old. her waist/hip measurement(dang big livers!) was 12" and rise was 10" and inseam was 4"

hope that helps.

This is a first...no need to tweak them. At a month old she's almost double her birth weight and aside from being a tad long (a small cuff worth) they fit well. She's been in them for about 2.5 weeks now.

Thank goodness. I was feeling guilty about having not done your sums for you yet :

No worries! She was able to fill them out enough in the butt shortly after I originally posted that they were workable. As of now they are almost all to the point of not needing cuffed! Besides, you have a new baby too. Once he came out I wasn't expecting anything.
