Cord stump question

Thread Starter
This is my third...you'd think I know.

DD3 was born on Sunday and her stump is already almost off. It'll likely fall off by tonight. However, the inside still looks gooey and what not. With my other two their stumps took longer so everything was already nice and dry/clean. DD2 needed a quickie wipe but there wasn't anything substantial.

Is this a normal in terms of stumps? Or should I limit her to a diaper and bottoms to avoid her shirt tugging on it for now and hope the inner part catches up?

Man, this question feels silly.

Ds' fell off within the first week & it was definitely still kind of gooey.

As long as it doesn't smell rotten, or get red around the area, it's fine. A little goo is normal.

Sounds normal to me.

Yes, sounds normal. You can use a blow-dryer for a few minutes at a time to help dry it more fully, though it isn't strictly needed if there is no foul odor. These things do have a 'variation of normal', like all else concerning birth and babies

All three of mine had a chunk left in their belly button after the bigger piece came off.

You can also twist open a capsule of goldenseal and pour some of the goldenseal powder on it. It kills bacteria and dries it up very quickly.

Yeah, sound normal to me.

DD's fell off at day 4 and it was still quite gooey on the inside. It also seeped blood for several days after that (a few spots on her shirt, dried blood inside her belly button) and that is normal too.

Huge ranges of normal! Aren't babies fun?

both my babies' cords fell off at 5 days. River's even bled a bit. i never put anything on them and neither got red/infected/stinky

humm I always think that the gooey stuff stinks, sort of smells rotten-I definately would not eat meat that smelled that way. Any how I have seen lots of babies have a cord fall off and still have some ooze just keep it cleaned and watch for any inflammation or increase in redness - you can squirt a bit of breast milk on the area to clean it with it has all those wonderful antibodies and will help keep the area healthy-
