CNN arcticle "Flu test wrong, girl amost dies"

Hi Mamas,

Here is a link to an article a friend sent me today. I know so many people who have received the rapid test for H1N1 with varying results. I guess I'm just wondering if others have found similar issues with the rapid test, or if this is just another scare tactic fed to us by the media to make it seem as though there are a larger number of actual H1N1 cases than is being reported.

Here is the link...

One of the news programs reported that the rapid flu tests have a 1/3 chance of a false negative. Doesn't surprise me, I've had issues with the rapid strep test.

The problem here is not the test; the state department of health where this girl lives said not to use the rapid test and to treat according to the symptoms. It has long been reported that the rapid test has a 50% chance of being wrong.

the 50% false-negative is true, as far as i know.

but for every one of the cases like this, where it turns out to be the flu and it tested wrong. there's probably also some where it wasn't the flu, but doctors treated is as such and there were consequences.

my son had suspected H1N1. the doctor gave him tamiflu. but they were out of the children's version, so we got adult pills mixed into syrup. the tamiflu made my son sicker...diarrhea, vomitting, dizziness, clutziness. the next doctor we saw at urgent care took him off of it.

so it's a catch 22.

here are the 2 problems I see:

Give her Motrin and Tylenol

gave Hayli antibiotics.
The dangerers of antipyrectics are well documeneted in the literature and taking antibiotics lowers your immune system, which in her case was already severellyt compromised. I'm wondering how much worse they made her before she became so seriously ill.

I'm sure pretty sick.

littlecindy-sorry about your ds, is he better now? It sounds like he had signs of side effects of the medication and is good you took him off it.

H1N1 disease discussion is hosted in our Health & Healing forum, while H1N1 vaccine discussion is hosted in the threads listed in our forum announcement. I am closing this thread since we are not currently accepting any new H1N1 threads in Vax.
