Pouch sling+newborn, I think I'm doing it wrong

I have noob questions about pouch-style slings and newborns. Our little guy (came early, is a month old now, is smallish) loves the Moby, and it seems, for lack of a better word, "ergonomic" to me when he's in it: he's chest-to-chest with us, his little head turns to one side or the other, his spine seems to be straight. Basically it seems pretty comfortable, and he snoozes away happily.

But while the Moby is really great for going on walks or other longer stretches of babywearing, I'd love to be able to use our pouch sling around the house for easier pop-in, pop-out-ability. (Also, being new at this, it takes me several minutes to get him into the Moby. The pouch just seems faster.)

But... I think I'm doing something wrong. Or have the wrong size pouch. Or something. Help!

When he's in the pouch, looking down from above, it seems that his little body curves around our torsos. He doesn't seem uncomfortable, but can that be okay for longer stretches? My instinct is to put a hand under him to lift him up and make his body "straighten out", which seems... wrong. I figure I'm either positioning him wrong, or the sling wrong, or, given his small size (five and a half pounds) the pouch is much too big, and I need one that hoists him up much higher?

If a pouch isn't good for a newborn, what other carrier could I try for shorter stretches? I'd really like something that requires no adjustment and is easy to get into and out of on your own.

Thanks, mamas.

I liked our ring sling for super fast in & out when ds was tiny. You can use them so the baby is still upright with their legs froggied under them. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...Cody/004-2.jpg

As for the moby...have you looked at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-VHUEM6K0Q? I found using their instructions were a LOT easier than the ones that came with my Moby(& they have a ton of them for other styles of carriers also) & then I could just wear the wrap like a shirt all day.

It would help if you posted pictures -- that way we can tell if the pouch is too big or what...

You can use a receiving blanket folded under baby to make it a little smaller...HERE are some tips and pictures for using a pouch correctly...

Nak.
Great info about newborn positioning here.

I second the recommendation for a ring sling. For me it has all the benefits of a pouch sling while being VERY adjustable. A ring sling will also be better for a tummy to tummy position like in the moby. The one drawback would be a little higher learning curve IMO but there are some great links/videos to help with that

I also used to pre-tie the moby and pop ds in and out during errands and stuff in our newborn days.

You could try tummy to tummy in the pouch too. That's how I wore my DS when he was tiny.

Def. with the pouch you want to follow the positioning tips posted by Pyrodjm, as with a newborn (and a preemie at that) you don't want his head tucking chin to chest and potentially impairing his breathing. He should not be in a prone, lying down position but more of an upright reclined seated position or a tummy to tummy position (fully upright).
