Breastfeeding law question

Am I interpreting this correctly? That any place, even private establishments, that I'm allowed to be in, I am allowed to bfeed in?

Quote:
Tenn. Code Ann. § 68-58-101 et seq. (2006) permits a mother to breastfeed an infant 12 months or younger in any location, public or private, that the mother is authorized to be, and prohibits local governments from criminalizing or restricting breastfeeding. Specifies that the act of breastfeeding shall not be considered public indecency as defined by § 39-13-511; or nudity, obscene, or sexual conduct as defined in § 39-17-901. (HB 3582)
I NIP a lot and I've never had anyone even take a second glance at me. But I was at the Bounce House last weekend with my 2 yr old and sat down on the floor there to nurse my 12wk old while still being able to see and monitor the toddler. I actually had a small burpee cloth over the baby's face, more because he was being very overstimulated by all the noise and activity, than to cover the act itself. But some older woman came over and said "let's see that baby's face." Knowing that I had my shirt covering my boob, I pulled the cloth back and she jerked away and said, "OMGosh, I didn't know he was feeding." And she ran off to her family and her husband. A few minutes later the husband comes and stands right over the top of me and stares down at me for a few minutes and walks off. He did this several times before I finally looked up and said, "Can I help you?" He said, "You shouldn't be doing THAT here." And I said, "Legally, I'm allowed to do this anywhere I want or need to." And he stormed off and dragged his 2 granddaughters and the rest of the family out of there.
I just want to make sure I'm correct and that I can fully defend myself if this happens again and the person makes a bigger deal out of it.

Yup sounds like as long as babe is under 12 m ur fine. The 12 m part annoys me cause I have a 17m old who insists on being nip frequently & of course I do it. You handled the situation just fine let them leave I always say if they dont like it dont look.

Yep you are protected by law as long as your baby is under a year old I loath that stipulation in the law here in TN.

I'm really annoyed by that 12mo thing. My nursling is only 12wks, but I used to NIP with my oldest when he was more than 12mos. I'd hate to think that I could have been charged with indecent exposure because he wasn't the age the state seems to think is the cut off point for bfing.

That 12 month stipulation is horrible, as was the way the man stood over you!

12 months?!?!?!?!?! that is ridiculous! babies don't automatically grow up the day they turn 1...that law needs to be amended. and as for people staring, i got some of that yesterday and i just smile and go about my business. when ALL public eating is outlawed, i won't NIP.

yup.....hmmmm, after 12 mos. it's illegal?!?!

The way the law is written yes it is illegal. So they could make you leave or charge you with indecent exposure if they where so inclined.

What?! His wife demanded that you lift the cover up and THEN they had the nerve to complain about what she saw when she did? Did I read that right?

yep. she demanded to see the baby and then acted like she was just horrified that i was feeding him. *sigh* it's almost as bad as my own mother. she's constantly all over me to cover up in public although she doesn't even usually realize i'm actually feeding him (she always says "omg, aren't you going to cover up?!!!" when i tell her that he's feeding).

whoa! i am so thankful that i've never had such an overt reaction to my NIP. congratulations to you for standing up for yourself and your baby!

as above, you were within your LEGAL right to nurse your baby where ever and when ever you or your baby feels like it.

And the 12 month rule is ridiculous. if your baby is over 12 months, then you still have the MORAL right to nurse, if not the legal one.

people are seriously deranged. you could see more breast on the beach than when most people nurse and i bet that guy wouldn't be complaining about seeing girls in bikinis now would he? i really get so aggravated that people are so ignorant about it.
