Painkillers afterwards?

I just wondered (!) I was reading through the NHS bit because I posted it in a reply to another post and it says :

As circumcision is a painful procedure, painkillers, such as paracetamol, or ibuprofen, will need to be taken for at least the first three days after the operation.

I was curious whether medication is given to newborn babies as I was always under the impression that they were not recommended for babies under 3 months or so?

random question I know but it was going round in my head!

As far as I know tylenol/acetaminophen is the only thing given. And usually just for one dose after or 30 minutes before the circ.

I really, really doubt any hospitals would give a newborn ibuprofen.

When our 2 circed boys had it done (know better now) but they didn't receive any kind of pain meds. The dr said they had a numbing cream put on before hand, and a local injection of pain killer like novacane(sp?) but that was it. It makes my stomach sick to this day just thinking about it.

since this is from the UK where as you know new born circ is VERY uncommon, could it have been talking about adult circ? That would be my guess at least.

If that "numbing cream" he used is the lidocaine jelly I wouldn't count on it being much use. I was recently prescribed some and it did darn little for a hemorrhoid, so I can't imagine it being much use before an injection of novocaine....let alone a circ...as in some cases I've heard that's all they use. I think its more of a "feel good" thing they do to tell the parents they used a "painkiller."
