stupid homemade laundry powder...

OK. I have made the homemade laundry powder several times. I did it with fels-naptha soap, which I will not use again, b/c it didn't seem to dissolve at all. I had a bar of soap that wa nice, almost brittle and it grated so fine it almost dissappeared into the powder...not sticky like the fels-naptha.

But it was not cheap, and the whole point of this is to save some cash.

So if you use this, what bar soap do you use for it? How much of the powder do you need to use?

I am considering adding some Kosher salt to it, b/c we have such hard water.

I didn't think I could grate the bar soap because of my arthritus so I have been buying my soap on Etsy. I love that you only use such a small amount with each load. And it does save a ton of money. If you do a search on Etsy you will come up with many sellers who have it.

Thanks!

I really don't mind making it, though....

I use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Bar Soap. It grates up really nice and is pretty inexpensive. I have been happy with it!

I found Kirk's Castile soap for $0.98/bar at my grocery store. It works great in my powdered laundry detergent.

I've found that if I let the bar of soap dry out for a few days before I use it, it helps it not to get so sticky when grating it. I also use a pastry mixer to mix everything together. It helps chop the soap even finer.

I use the Fels Naptha but do as the pp and get it out of the wrapper as soon as I get home. It dries out really well and I can grate it really fine (with the kitchenaide)

I buy Sunlight soap bars at the grocery store. I know one of my neighbours use Ivory soap.

I get a fine powder if the bars have been out of their packaging for a while.

Yay! That is exactly the tips I needed! I will try that!

Now I get to have fun trying new soaps, too!

I use the Fels Nathpa and also had a problem before someone told me how they did it. Use the grating blade of your food processer to grate the soap. Then remove the soap and change to the choping blade. Add your soap and some of the powder to get it super fine. Mix in the rest of the dry ingredients. This works for me-gets it super fine.
