Went to a new dentist today for a consultation. My top right back tooth has 2 cracks in it (He took photos, I saw it on his TV) and he recommended that I get a crown on it. I've never had crowns on my teeth. The tooth has an old white filling in it that looks fine. I have no pain. I didn't even know I had cracks in my tooth. He told me that eventually (have no idea when) the tooth could crack and part of it fall off and they could re-do the filling OR the crack could crack further underneath the tooth and split it and result in pain and then lead to root canal (never had that either, but it sounds expensive and painful).

My insurance for major dental doesn't kick in until mid 2010, so I won't be doing anything with it until then. So assuming it is in the same shape 6 months from now, would you recommend getting a crown? Has anyone had one and regretted it? I've read some stuff online where people with crowns have had sensitivity issues. anyone not had a crown and been fine for years, or ended up with pain and root canal? Your stories and feedback would be great. Thanks.
