Newborn Stool ?

Hi, my daugther was born on Wed., 12/2. she passed the merconium early Thursday morning, in the middle of the night, but hasn't pooped since. She is wetting diapers. Should I be concerned? She is EBF and if I remember, my son did not poop every day either but the nurse at the dr's office made it seem like this was a big deal. Thanks for any help!

Hi Mama,

Welcome to MDC, and Congratulations on your daughter's birth!

How are baby's wet diapers? There should be one pee for each 24 hours of life - for example, on day 3 baby should have 3 heavy pees in 24 hours, etc up to day 6 of life, when 6 heavy wet diapers/24 hours is normal for then on.

How is the nursing going? How often is baby nursing? How is her swallowing? Did your milk come in yet?

Do you have access to a good LC?

Here is a really good article on newborn stool from La Leache League. Newborn stool counts are important. Later on babies go to stooling less frequently, but at first poops are very important. http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/L...Jan98p123.html

Hopefully it will give you some ideas.
