4mo only 11 lbs

So we had a visit with the pedi yesterday and DD is only 11 lbs. She is almost 24 inches tall and in the 3rd % for weight. The doc was only mildly concerned but I am a little freaked out. She eats like crazy - nurses every 1 1/2 to 2 hours during the day and 2-3 times at night. I can't feed her any more than I already am!! I know she is getting a lot of milk - I do not have any supply issues. Does she just have a fast metabolism? Is there anything I should be doing?

Does anyone else have a tiny little one?

My best friend has a baby girl who's about 4 months and two weeks old and is 12 pounds. She eats like crazy too. If you're baby is making enough wet diapers and seems content I wouldn't worry about the numbers too much.

How big was she at birth? If she's dropped significantly down the curve, I'd be concerned, but if she was 25% or so at birth, I wouldn't worry unless she continues to fall down (or off) the curve.

And even then, as long as she contiues to GAIN weight (and please don't obsess over it) then if she's making wet and poopy diapers I wouldn't worry.
My DS was 8ls 4oz at birth, he was 16lbs 13ox at 6.5 months and MY doc is freaking out about it. Give me a break, he's gaining, he's meeting milestones, he has a few (small) rolls, he's happy, peeing and pooping regularly and normally and my family is full of tall skinny kids. WHY should I be concerned?

My baby was 8lbs3oz at birth and never gained more than a pound a month. My doc wasn't concerned but I was and obsessed over it even though everything looked great with her. If she is peeing and pooping normally and she is happy then she is fine. I have had 2 kids with fast metabolism: DS and DD2. They both eat an incredible amount of food and stay skinny. In 2 days my son ate half of the Thanksgiving turkey .
DD1 on the other hand eats a lot less food and is on the chubby side.
They are all different.
Too bad I'm on the chubby side too!

Henry is 4 months today... and he is just about 11 lbs. At his 2 month appointment he was under the 5th percentile, but the Dr. said he is fine. He isn't gaining as much as any of the books say he should, but he is gaining, has his wet and poopy diapers. He is hitting his milestones on time, is happy and healthy. My husband's mother told me that all of her children grew slowly in the first year. They were all formula fed the entire time, and eating solids by 4 months. My husband was the tiniest kid in his class until 9th grade. Then he shot up and is now 5'10" tall. At any rate, I am just going by diapers and milestones. If he wasn't hitting his milestones, wasn't smiling, etc. I might worry, but he is tiny and that is just fine.

My SILs babes are tiny like that. Some kids just are. If she's acting normally, eating well (and she is) and making enough diapers, I'm sure you're fine.

Or, on the other end of the spectrum, my DD was 9lbs12oz at birth and is approximately 15 pounds now (14.25 at 4mo appt). I keep reading stuff about how they should double their weight by 5 months, and she's probably about 5 pounds short of that. But I'm not worried cuz she's fine in all other ways, and still 75% for weight.

Thanks everyone. I am trying not to think about it too much. She has a ton of wet/poopy diapers so I know she is eating well. And I am a milk factory! DH and I are rather small people so I am sure it is just genetics, but sometimes it just helps to hear from other mamas.

nak

my son has been off the weight charts since one month or so. he was 6lbs, 3oz at birth and is now 14.5 pounds at 9 months. about 30th percentile for height. he's below the first or second percentile weight-wise, but he's still totally thriving. crawling, standing, babbling, playing, eating solids, has three teeth...he's met every milestone and some even early. good output, good nursing. his doctor is not worried, my little guy is very healthy, just teeny tiny.

My LO was 6lbs at birth, only 10ish pounds at 4 months, 12lbs at 6-7 months and just shy of 16lbs now at 13 months. She is super healthy and no doctor (western or naturopath) has ever said a thing about her weight being too low. Our doctor told us she was 'fantastic' at our last check-up!

My eight month old cousin is 13 lbs and formula fed so you can see how much she eats, and it's a lot. I wouldnt worry

This, to me, is the key. Our first Ped was always dragging this out during our visits. Another Ped, thought he was fine. I am 5' and a hair. Dh is 5'5". I was a tiny child. I know that our son might not be the biggest kid. When you stand him next to his parents, he looks completely in proportion. He is nearly 10 and weighs about 50 pounds.

DD just made 11 lbs a few weeks ago, and she is 6mo.

Every time I start to worry, I call the lactation consultant who reassures me that she's fine, she's growing consistently (if not rapidly). The pediatrician has also always been reassuring - "I guess it's just her destiny to be petite," he says.

My husband is a beanpole. I'm not huge. I think she got DH's metabolism.

aet.tea, our babies have the same birthdate! I would call mine petite, but she's actually bigger than yours, 13lb8oz at her 6mth check, up from 7lb4oz at birth. Of all our kids she's been our slowest gainer, but not dramatically so, DS was actually smaller at 6 months than she is, but the gap was less than the gap between their birthweights.

With DS we got a lot of people stressing over his weight, now with DD everyone is completely cool about it and it's not just that they've seen our family do this before, we've moved and have new caregivers!

iirc DD was 11lb3oz at her 4mth visit, so 11lb at 4mths is pretty normal for me.

DS1 gained really slow (though he was long!), he didn't really catch up with the growth charts until 24mos...and even so he is still very lean (you can see his ribs lol) but he has hit all of his milestones so I'm not worried...I was also a lean baby so I think it's genetic.

DS2 is 5.5mos and he is not 13lb 10oz. He is "huge" to me compared to DS1, though he is still a slender baby - he's over 26" though for height!

I would just watch and make sure your babe is not losing...I bet you just have a little one :-)
