Need advice on getting baby to sleep in longer stretches

My ds2 is 9 months old and still up, many nights, every 1-2 hours (he generally wants to be nursed back to sleep). If he would sleep until 9 am, this would be fine, but as it is he is ready to get up for the day between 6 and 7 am. It is really starting to affect me.

I am not interested in nightweaning him, I know he still needs to eat in the middle of the night sometimes, but I really need him to start sleeping in longer stretches. If he would even stretch it out to 3 hours, that would be fine. But somethings got to give here.

How do I go about getting him to sleep a bit longer? Tips, tricks, advice, book recommendations? I have "The No Cry Sleep Solution," but we are doing a lot of traveling until the holidays are over so I don't want to start and stop multiple times.

When DD would start to stir I'd gently rock her and sometimes she'd fall back asleep rather than wake all the way up to nurse...but I don't think that solves you having to be awake for that part.

Have you combed through the links at the top of this fourm?
