Utter newbie with no teacher or classes... how would you learn?

OK if you were starting from ground zero and had no one to teach you how to hand or machine sew anything... and had no way to take a class... what would your learning advice be?

I have a 19 yo cousin who would like to learn, but she has zero (as in has never even sewed a button back on anything) and no one that can teach her and she can't afford any classes.

If you were me (and I can't really teach her, we don't live close... and my books arent really for absolute begginers... and I am nowhere near a pro with a machine, I am REALLY rusty... my hand sewing is passable but nothing awe inspiring ) what would you advise?

Have I missed a book or dvd or website that would actually work for a "zero" learner? Hand or machine?

Is she online? There are literally thousands of tutorials online for everything from hand sewing, threading a sewing machine and stitching seams to fantastic long arm quilting.

I LOVE this one!! I can't learn from instructions, but visually if I see it, I understand better.

Check out your local library...there should be lots of books. I also recommend a book by Amy Karol called Bend the Rules Sewing. It has lots of easy starter projects, plus tells you what you need to get started and why you should have certain tools around.
