popped amaranth?

So I have been trying to make my own energy bars and lots of the recipes I want to try call for popped amaranth. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I'm having trouble with the popping part......I used a bit of coconut oil then put a thin layer of amaranth in the skillet. Maybe I tried putting too much in but it didn't pop? I did it over medium heat. Anyway, I tend to be inept in the kitchen so I'm not surprised.

Will someone walk me through this process? Or if you have any tips...

Thanks!

Heat the pan and then throw it in. I didn't use oil, I don't think. It also doesn't pop much, maybe yours popped and you didn't realize it. I gave up the energy bar making because it was so expensive.

I just realized I really was not much help!

I put mine in a hot dry pot to pop it, no oil.

I've only ever tried this when I had a microwave to use (don't have one at home) and I just put the amaranth in a paper bag and it popped quite nicely.

I agree with the others - don't use any oil in your pan. It'll "drown" the grains no matter how little you use.

Very hot pan, zero oil, only put in a thin layer on the pan. If it's crowded they all won't pop evenly and if the pan isn't hot enough they won't pop. I did a whole how to on my blog if you want to see:

Good luck!
