Would you be worried? (Baby put bad thing in mouth)

Count on me to have the weird concern of the day...

So, this morning I was in our bathroom and had to pee, so I set DS down in front of me. He held on to the edge of the tub while I was peeing and was just dancing around. Then he reached for the soap dish (which is usually up on top, but I guess my DH left it on the edge of the tub today) and picked up a small piece of soap and put it in his mouth. I jumped up and took it from him. No biggie.

Then, later today, I was moving the aforementioned soap dish and noticed that its paint finish is totally disintegrating and coming off. The soap was sitting in a puddle of gross greenish liquid from where the paint was coming off. I thought the thing was ceramic (it's heavy!), but turns out it's silver or some metal with a ceramic-like paint finish.

So now I am freaking out. Could there have been some paint on the piece he put in his mouth? If so, what do I look for? Could it have had lead? Other poisons? He has been fine all day with no symptoms of a poisoning...is he out of the woods?

I feel so bad...Please make me feel better...

I'm generally of the "meh, he's probably fine" camp. It sounds pretty gross though. I'd just watch him and see that he acts normal. I'm sure he's fine.

My grandma had a dish like that. I loved playing in the puddle that got left.

I'm sure he's fine though.

Thanks, you two! I feel better and the soap dish is in the trash. Hate to quote Sex and the City, but as Miranda said, "I am prepared for the expected, but I am not prepared for the unexpected..." He seems fine this morning.

Between both kids, I don't even want to talk about the stuff I've fished out of their mouths.

The lead issue is more about toys that get used and mouthed for a while, or things that get chewed on for weeks, than something your kid has in his/her mouth once. I wouldn't worry about lead.

The ick factor is something that you'll have to deal with again, most likely, I'm afraid.

Yes, I likely will. I am crossing my fingers that I adjust to these terrigying feelings of the what ifs overtime.

Oh man. My kids ate (eat) everything they come across. I've fished hair/lint/fuzz/debri balls out of their mouths from under the refrigerator. Money. My oldest daughter bit off the tip of a lightbulb and started chewing it. And there were a few things that really freaked us out. But ya know, she's fine today. So I'm sure a tiny bit of chipped paint won't hurt her. And it's not likely to be lead anyway - unless it was painted before 1960 or something. Life for a child is messy, dirty, gooey, and gross. It only gets worse from here! Have you found your kid with his own poop in his mouth yet? That's the classic!
