How many doses of Dtap do you need to be considered immune to pertussis?
The recommended childhood schedule has 5 Dtap vaccines, generally given at 2, 4, 6 months, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years old. Then a booster of Tdap at 11-12 years.

Keep in mind:

"The findings of efficacy studies have not demonstrated a direct correlation between antibody response and protection against pertussis disease."

I know about the effectiveness and the schedule, but for some reason I thought 3 doses conferred immunity, am I wrong?

Inside Vaccines has some very good information about the DTaP vaccine.

if you look at the catch up schedule it is three doses if they have not received their first prior to 12 months and are older than 7. though that is actually the Td or TDaP, rather than the DTaP.

you could google scholar for an article on DTaP effectiveness if you are interested in scientific studies. i'd do it for you but i have to go make stir-fry for dinner

eta: it's actually 4 doses that is recommended
