Any ideas of good books for this purpose? I want to read to them both for a number of reasons and would like some suggestions. I have found that any old loved book of the 9yo will get her interested, but I would like something else. The 9yo is into chapter books, the 3yo will sit and listen to Berenstain (sp bad, sorry) Bears, A Bad Case of Stripes, and books of that length or so. I haven't tried a chapter book with him. Thanks for any thoughts!

If you want to try something longer, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner might be good to start with. Each story is as long as a chapter in a chapter book, but they can stand alone, and they have plenty of pictures. And they're so well-written they're wonderful for older kids and adults as well as little kids.
Some very short chapter books (short enough you might be able to read the whole thing in one sitting), with plenty of pictures, that might be interesting to a 9 year old:
The Bears on Hemlock Mountain - Alice Dalgliesh
Good-bye, Funny Dumpy-Lumpy - Bernard Waber
the Catwings series - Ursula K. Le Guin
the Lighthouse Family series - Cynthia Rylant
Some that are a bit longer (or quite a bit longer):
Billy the Bird - Dick King-Smith
Little Dog Lost - Rene Guillot
The Boxcar Children - Gertrude Chandler Warner
My Father's Dragon (and the 2 sequels) - Ruth Stiles Gannett
Jenny and the Cat Club - Esther Averill
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Frank L. Baum
Picture books that might interest a 9 year old and a 3 year old:
anything by Dr. Seuss, Russell Hoban, Beatrix Potter, or Byrd Baylor
Eloise - Kay Thompson
My Farm - Alison Lester
Weslandia - Paul Fleischman
illustrated fairy tales
poetry - try A.A. Milne, Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky or any kids' anthology
Oh, and if you don't care whether it's good literature, you might try the Junie B. Jones, Magic Treehouse, or Secrets of Droon series.
