Diaper changes on the run: diaper changing 101

How do you change your wee crawling one's diaper?

Mine won't lie still! He hates being on his back, so I end up chasing him around the house in one way or another: with a soiled diaper half-way off, a naked bum scootching across the floor, or a clean diaper half-way on. It's easiest when he pulls himself up to standing and chews on something... at least then he's distracted!

That's fine for me, but when I tell my babysitters that's how we roll, I get these bug-eyed stares like I'm crazy.

How do you mamas do it? Does it get easier?

Is it time to, erm, wean from the diaper?

It's pretty easy to change a standing baby's diaper if you use prefolds trifolded into a cover and then snapped or velcro'd on. Lots of babies get changed standing up you just have to get used to it.

Ha. It seems like you realize it can be done you are just having trouble explaining it to other people. My point was that it's normal and at least somewhat common. There is a daycare in my town that prefers parents provide diapers that can be put on and taken off standing up.

We use the change table exclusively for changing diapers/clothes. There is nowhere to go & although ds isn't always pleased to be there he does stay relatively still.

I've never been able to master standing diaper changes - especially for poopy diapers!

Yeah we always just make ds lie down... it just takes less time overall that way

Learn to change diapers faster. And hold them down. Their want for mobility does not trump their need to be changed.

I used to change DS standing up for pee, but never mastered it for poop. So I would throw my leg over his chest, pin him down and change as fast as I could. A friend referred to it as WWF-style diaper changing.

I put my leg over his chest and hold him down... call it restraint, but having a clean bum is not negotiable! Sometimes it takes two of us. And occasionally, if he's really fighting the diaper change, I go run a bath and just bathe it off of him (if I have the time). What I have noticed now that DS is getting closer to 2 is that he usually puts up the really awful fights when his bum is kind of rashy. So then I break out the super duty Weleda Calendula Cream that works wonders on his poor little bum (I swear, one application will clear up his worst rashes).

my ds was THE WORST when it came to getting his diaper changed. I did the standing up changes, and the shower sprayer for poops, etc. But what ended up working best for us was ECing. It was a pretty extreme move, but we were all so much happier! I started when ds was about 6mo and we mastered catching his poops prety quickly, and his pees not too much later. By 19 months he was using the potty on his own.
