Repair large hole in knitted blanket?

My lo spotted a beautiful hand knitted blanket at the thrift store. She said "pretty, pretty" and it was 99 cents, so I bought it. Unfortunately after unfolding it there is a rather large hole. It is a pattern that looks like leaves. I'm not really big on perfection, so I'm thinking the goal is to make it structurally sound again, but how? I'm still pretty much a newbie, but feel confident I can fix this. I could possibly put heart shaped patches or something over the fix if it doesn't match the pattern, or not . Not sure where to start though. Oh and it is a white shiny yarn I don't have anyway, so yeah, its definitely not going to match up.

heh, if it were me, i'd secure in all the problem areas by sewing by hand and then knit a big patch square/other shape to cover the hole X 2 (maybe a leaf shape?).

sew through the blanket to attach the patches to each other and anchor them to the blanket. it'd be a fun opportunity to let her pick the "complimentary" yarn for color/texture, and maybe even a fun stitch pattern.

Thanks! Good idea, I think that leaf patches would be cute.
