Teething hell or cold or both?

DS is 4.5 mo and has had the "preteething" signs since 3 months. The past few weeks have gotten worse and then this past Friday a tooth poked through the top. Since then we have been fighting a fever- 100.4-101.7F, waking ever 1/2-1 hr at night, fussing constantly, stuffy nose, drooling, and just in general upset/pain. He doesn't want to eat much and pulls off the breast a lot. He has also had more frequent stools. We have used acetaminophen sparingly and homeopathic teething tablets/strips. They only help a little and short-term.

Does this sound like its just teething? How long will the awful teething symptoms last and how long for the tooth to just come out?

I have a call into the pedi. I have never seen him so miserable!

My 10 month old is getting his top 2 teeth, he already has his bottom two but this time is HELL he has had a fever and miserable almost constantly. im not sure he may have a slight cold too but i dont think so. i just cant wait for this seconf tooth to pop thru. it look like it hurts and his actions tell me its excruciating pain. he has been permenently attatched to his binky but i think were going to take this opportunity to let him give it up because it hurts him right now and wants nothing to do with it. well hope all goes well for you. oh and his fever with these teeth has been around 103 when he gets tired too. i know that sound high but its only when hes very tired and thats how we all get when we dont get enough sleep. peace to you and your family

Sounds like normal teething to me. My DD is 10 months and has 8 teeth. She started getting them early. Try giving your little one a carrot to gum on.

I think it could definitely just be teething but IMO that sounds exactly like the cold my ds just had a few weeks ago. FWIW our ped doesn't consider anything under 101 a fever - just an elevated temp and nothing to fret about. I would be/was more concerned about the unhappiness and continue to use natural teething remedies and acetaminophen as needed
