Heat in the winter - Page 3

We are in MN and have it at 60 overnight and 65 during the day.

If cost were no object we would bump it up 5 degrees. Although at the moment I am a pg furnace and I still get sweaty at night with the temp at 60! Poor DS and DH are freezing their butts off and I am throwing the covers off.

i live in alaska. we keep our house at 62 degrees most of the time, but 65 if we are feeling really cold, and then turn it down to 58 at night.

it works well for us, but when people visit us, they are always freezing...so i guess it does not work well for everyone!

Right now we keep the heat at 62 during the day, and 55 at night. I sometimes turn it up to 64 if someone is coming over. We wear regular clothing (jeans, tees, etc) plus socks or slippers in the house. Usually I wear a fleece or sweater, as do the kids.

If money were no object, I would probably have it at 65 daytime, 60 night.

65-70 during the day
50ish at night.

We have wood heat, though, so our preferences don't really make much difference.

We're cool=ish on our temps, and try to make good use of our woodstove and our own wood. We are in the process of having an eval done of our home and heating use. Interestingly, the guy said that it's more cost effective for us to keep our thermostats within 10 degrees of where we want to be (daytime) at night. So, whereas we used to basically turn everything off at night (oil, baseboard heat, gas), he says it's ultimately more cost effective to not turn it off, but maintain a temp to within 10 degrees of what we want. We'll see if we're comfortable with that.

Well, we live in the South now, but we used to live in the mid-Atlantic area. So, a real winter, but not terribly cold compared to New England winters (where I went to school).

Normally we kept it around 68-70 F (same here in the South). I normally go around in a tee-shirt and long pants, usually no socks, but my feet are cold. I always feel a bit warmer when I put socks on, but for some reason I don't most of the time. DH is always wearing socks, a fleece, etc. He's just cold-natured I guess. Our sticky point is nighttime temps. I hate sleeping in a warm room, so I like to drop the temp 10 degrees F. But that's too cold for DH, so we've been doing 63-65 F and I just use fewer blankets on my side of the bed.

I do think the type of heat makes a difference too. Half our house is heated with gas and the other half is a heatpump. Sometimes when the heatpump is "heating" I feel chilled from the air blowing into the room! The gas side is always toasty warm when the heat comes on.
