Near Miss in Quirky IKEA Bed

We got our bed second hand and realized on assembly that it was a bit off (the pre-drilled holes for the center beam in the head were lower than the pre-drilled holes at the same "setting" for the side supports and the footboard, making a prounced dip towards the middle at the head). We thought the boxspring would nullify the problem, but I have to admit, the bed's a little weird. Fast forward to last night: I wake up to the 1mo pressed hard against me. I resettle her where she belongs and watch as she inexorably rolls back into me. I resettle her again, a little more carefully, and watch as she rolls onto her stomach. It occurs to me that the dip in the bed has gotten more pronounced since we got it, probably due to the bedspring sagging or settling.

Now I'm terrified of co-sleeping in that bed again. We're taking the mattress off into the living room for some camping at least until the solstice (I need a change of pace, anyway). It was so nice to, briefly, have a bed towards the end of last pregnancy, even if it was pretty small for 3yo, DH, myself, and my pregnant belly. I don't know right now if we're going to dispose of the bed, disassemble it and put it in storage, or partially disassemble it and re-drill the holes. I'm beginning to feel l'm never going to sleep in a bed again, and that's a downer right now.

Oh well. Has anyone tried sleeping the family on a pair of mattresses pushed together? Thanks. I'm sure this is just a vent.

I think two mattresses on the floor sounds much better than an oddly sagging mattress!

How frustrating to get a bed and find it lacking!

Well, our first night camping out on the mattress on the floor in the living room was bliss. Everyone slept much better. It is irritating to drag the mattress back to the bedroom in the morning, but worth it. I think a pair of futons is in our future.

Any ideas for making the "gap" extra safe? The futons we're looking at are essentially the traditional kind, so no more than three inches thick.

can you bungee cord them together? maybe run it under the two mattresses?

They're not that stiff, they'd wrinkle up like quilts if we did that. I was thinking of a long, thin buckwheat pillow that'd just mold to the gap. In any event, the baby who'd be affected by the gap, would be on the outside and not facing it.
