Fasting

In my religion, we fast once a month. DS is 11 months, and I did not fast throughout my pregnancy, or since he was born. I would like to resume fasting, if possible, now that he's eating solids more & nursing a bit less. I think I will wait until he meets his birthday, and I'll ask his ped (also a lactation consultant).

I'm curious what you mamas think. In my religion, the fast is for 24 hours, or two meals. Ordinarily, I would skip breakfast and lunch, incluidng fluids.

What effect would skipping just one meal have on nursing? I'm considering skipping just lunch, as that's the time of day DS nurses least, but continue drinking water.

I think that sounds like a reasonable place to start. If you find yourself feeling faint or not managing, you can always take a step back. I would not fast from fluids.

Kelly Bonyata's got some info here which might be helpful:

I have fasted (for blood tests - but because of timing I ended up doing them in the afternoon rather than morning so I didn't eat until supper) twice with no problems.

I have slept through several meals and haven't had any problems. I suppose that would count as fasting.

Are there older women in your church you could ask about their experiences?

I love this advice! It's subtle lactivism and community connection.

I agree with the PPs who said not to fast from fluids (water) but a fast from one meal during the day should be fine. I also like the idea of seeing how it goes.

Best wishes, Mama!
