hi--
1 month old dd is broken out badly and pretty fussy, mucous in the poop. her pedi agrees that we need to look at dairy first. anyone have advice? how long before it improves? when will she outgrow it? dh & i were vegan for over a year so we have the diet part covered, just need specifics on when the crying will stop
thanks!

You should see results pretty quickly. I noticed results after a week or so. Then there seemed to be a bit of a setback, which can be common. Also, I later realized that soy protein was also a problem. So if it doesn't seem like dairy elimination is working, try with the soy as well. Those two generally to hand-in-hand.

I don't know about the outgrowing. I'm still doing it now with my 4 month old. I have gone back to dairy a few times (usually by accident) and it still affects him, but it doesn't seem to bother him quite as much as when he was a little baby. I think they get to be more efficient at eliminating gas, so that's part of it.

I second the soy AND milk. DS had equal issues with both.

We saw fussiness, rash and reflux.

I saw results within a week...then it got worse for a week and was all resolved in three. I still see immediate reactions when I've accidentally had soy or milk.

it is hard I'm sorry...

My LO has a milk allergy also- I noticed improvement after a few days - he didn't cry all day - but then it was bad on and off for about three more weeks. I knew it was the dairy b/c he actually had some good days- whereas before he cried all day - every day. I drove myself crazy eliminating more things- in those few weeks- trying to get him better- but in the end... I guess I just needed time. I've since reintroduced nuts- but I'm to scared to try soy- (b/c they usually go hand in hand) Looking back I wish I had just stopped the dairy ( so I would know it was just that) - but when you're LO is crying- you'll do anything! I know quite a few babies that have outgrown it at a year( actually the 5 people I know -all did-) So there's hope! I'm waiting until probably a year to try it in my diet . At least you were vegan- so you have meal ideas! I know how hard it is when your LO is crying... SO HARD.. sending you good vibes.. it will get better soon (:

It takes about 2-3 weeks for the dairy proteins to leave your system, and potentially another 2-3 to leave baby's, but most people see results within 2 weeks if dairy is the culprit. And I agree about the soy - I had to eliminate both. Within 2 weeks DD was like a different baby!

As far as growing out of it, I think it's probably different for every baby, and probably depends on whether it's an allergy or a sensitivity/intolerance.

I did this too, my son is now 5 months and i went off dairy when he was 6 weeks, it took about 2 and a half weeks to get normal ( before then it was nasty, mucousy green poop, rashes and gassy crying fits) but the symptoms decreased dramatically after the first 4-5 days and then kept decreasing. I was also a vegan before pregnancy, and it was WIC that got me eating dairy, i have not had to eliminate soy, thank goodness, because now WIC gives soymilk!

Finally, as to time, my lactation consultant/pediatrician recommended reintroducing dairy after the baby was 6 months, but said i might have to start with yougurt, and similar products. I personally haven't decided if i am going to do it, but if you are wondering how long you have to do the diary free thing, that is one person's opinnion. Good luck!
