natural nightlight/nightlight concerns

Here is my nightlight dilemma (I am sure some of you have BTDT!)

We co-sleep and our house is dark, very dark. We live in the country, no streetlights, many trees, so no outside light at night when the lights go off. In order to see dd during the night (to nurse, move her side to side of me, make sure covers aren't over her head, she's breathing, etc, etc) we need a nightlight. We've slept with one since she was born (she's almost 8mo now.)

But I worry about how the light is messing with her pineal gland/sleep rhythms, as I have always read that a completely dark sleep environment is the optimal thing. I just can't see an option, and I think she will be in our bed for many years to come.

So what would/have you all done? Used a nightlight? Groped in the dark?

I have been searching online for some sort of "natural" nightlight that maybe wouldn't be quite so disruptive or bright. Do you all have any suggestions?

The things that I found so far to consider were a Himalayan salt lamp....

where I was looking at the moonlight low energy nightlight (but can't find a place to actually purchase it!)

My parents have a salt light lamp and I like it when I got up to nurse or feed him at night because it wasn't too bright, but bright enough to see pretty well. I wouldn't use it all night long though because it was a little too bright for sleeping. The other night lights look nice though!

Is your current night light that bright? Have you noticed it causing sleep problems for her or you? Our bedroom gets a glow in it at night because of the lights outside the other apartments, but it doesn't affect me or him. But I do know that one night light I had was too bright for him. I'll look into the second link, I really like the options they have.

I googled the moon light and found a couple sites that have them for sale but they were all on european sites. The cat one looked pretty good too.

Oh, the Leviton Glow Guide Night Light is something similar too. It's on amazon.

We've used touch lights. I just turn them off when I need to see and leave them off otherwise. You can tweak them some to get the amount of light you want, the trouble is keeping them working at all. Ours both had short circuits and ran out the batteries.

Yeah, I use a touch light too. I keep it in an old small butter container on the bed, because it's pretty bright- this filters the light like a lampshade, only pointing up instead of down. Also it keeps the light from sliding back behind the bed, since it's pretty small! It's only on for a few minutes 3 times a night or so.

I got mine at the dollar store and it's been working great for 5 months or so. But if it dies, at least it's cheap to replace!

They make night lights that are nothing more than tiny LCD screens that plug into the wall. These use almost zero energy, and their light output is pretty minimal. You might want to try that.
