I guess this is "beyond" - normal PP bleeding?

I'll be 6 weeks postpartum on Thursday, and I'm still bleeding bright red, fairly a lot. It had tapered off at about 3 weeks, and I'll admit, we had sex. After that, it started back up. I still figured it was fairly normal, but it still seems weird to have ALL this 6 weeks later. I'm not like "soaking a pad in an hour" like to go to the ER, but I can't get in to see my midwife until next Friday. I'm not sure what could be causing this.

As I understand it, retained placenta would've had me smelling infected fairly early.

I don't think it's my period. I am breastfeeding, but they also get supplemented, though I figure with two I'm surely breastfeeding enough for a singleton. Granted, my periods were erratic before pregnancy, hence the IUI and subsequent twins, so who knows.

Should I wait until the midwife appointment? Call my PCP? Call the midwives and see about getting a closer appt? Call my fertility clinic?

call your midwives- didn't they schedule a 6week postpartum appointment with you? it is hard to say what is going on - could just be normal for you- twins can have a bigger placenta/placental site so may take longer to heal up - and it isn't completely out of the norm to have bleeding for longer than 6 weeks

Yeah I'd call and see if you can get an appointment sometime this week. It may be nothing, but it's enough not-normal that I'd want to be checked.

Are you able to rest much during the day? My midwife always said if the bleeding returned to bright red, it could be a sign of overdoing activity. I am assuming if you have twins, life is pretty crazy right now, but is there someone that could help out so you are getting rest? Or if there's no one to help, could you let the housework slide for a week, use disposable diapers, and just nest with the boys in bed as much as possible?

Good luck, I hope this resolves soon.

Personally I have had 8 week lochia off and on with my kiddos. It was never a period. I agree that having twins would probably leave more healing since you'd have two placentas or a much larger one. That would definitely make sense. I also agree that doing too much (which I'm sure you are, with twins!!) can increase bleeding as well.

I would put in a call if you are feeling concerned.
