Alternative to meds for thrush?

I'm in the middle of a 7 day course of antibiotics. UGH... LO and I are both on probiotics... I'm pretty sure I'm getting thrush though? Itchy .. sore when he nurses ..little sharp pains? The lady at WF said that probiotics get cancelled out by the antibiotics I'm on... anyone heard of this? I read that some people use Gentian Violet- but something on Dr. Sears blog made me nervous to try it. Has anyone had any success w- anything besides meds and GV? I've been through so much the last couple of months w- LO's food allergies and latching issues. I was so sad to have to go on antibiotics for BV and now I'm dealing with this, I'm so tempted to stop the antibiotics ( i have 3 days left)- but don't want to end up needing something stronger. I'm so discouraged. Please help! ( I called my gyno and she said that they don't know it's thrush until I have deep pains- then they will prescribe something) But I would rather not- If I don't have to.

first, i would say treat now! go get some lotrimin and treat your nipples, check your child's mouth and see about getting some nystatin for them- you want to treat both of you.

If you want to go all natural, you can use a weak vinegar wash on your nipps and even in your child's mouth ( but they WILL NOT like it). You could also do a solution of the probiotics and water on your nips and their mouth.

Finally, go to Dr. Newman's website and look at what he has to say- don't wait for the shooting pains- they are horrible!!!

Good luck!

I was told I had thrush for 4 weeks and tried every alternative treatment with no luck (gentian violet, grapeseed, jack newman all purpose nipple ointment, lotrimin, vitamin b) In addition, I unfortunately treated my baby as well with nystatin & gentian violet) Finally I talked to a girl who said she had the same thing I did (sharp paints, itching red nipples, purple nipples, pain breastfeeding) and it wasn't thrush but vasospasms. It was being caused by a bad latch. I fixed the latch problem and everything went away. Here is a link, good luck!
