Is it ever possible for an 18 month old to truly self wean?

Just what the heading says I guess. My mom is convinced that if I attempt to nightwean my daughter will completely wean herself as she has majorly cut out the day nursing sessions. I am not ready to wean her and dont think she is ready but I am exhausted.

I assume she will just up the day nursings as a result of the night sessions disappearing.

What do you guys think?

My answer to this would be yes, very rarely.

As to the question of if your dd will wean because of night weaning, I would guess no. If she doesn't ask during the day then you offer. And, if you find she is working towards no nursing during the day then perhaps you make a compromise on the night weaning.

Yeah I have always offered her during the day when she wasn't asking, although lately she has been saying no. So usually I just say ok but sometimes I ask her a couple of times if I am on my way out and wont see her for a few hours, for example.

As for the night weaning I have *said* I was going to do it for a few months, I just read Dr. Jay Gordon's "Good nights" and was thinking of implementing this plan, but it just never seems like a good time. And to be honest I am just to exhausted to think of losing a few nights sleep right now anyway.

I don't want to risk weaning her completely. I don't think either of us are ready for that.

As long as you keep offering during the daytime, I don't think this is a risk.
