Yarn but no pattern and hat question

I have a very large percentage (out of 284yds I think I used 10?) of some feltable wool. I think it's called self striping (as if for socks?) and have no idea what to make with it. It's pinks/purple and cream. I also have about the same amount of the same yarn in a cream solid color.

Any suggestions? I made some felted slippers for dd.

Hat question:

I've been working on this pattern:
http://www.soulemama.com/SouleMamaKnitHat.pdf

and am trying to make it for dd who is 2.5yrs. It is tiny when I knit it up! My gauge is correct. It seems as though it could nearly fit a newborn. I realize it is supposed to stretch but there is no way it would fit her rather average sized noggin..

I'm casting on 55 as the pattern calls for. Going up a size in needles would require me to buy needles - rather not. I'm stumped because as I said my gauge is correct.

Tips if you've made this hat?

Thanks,
~L.

My son from the age of 2 onward, needed adult sized hats (20"+). I don't think I've ever made him a child's hat.

So I'd cast on the 67, if 55 seems too small.

Check your yarn weight - it sounds like what you have is sock yarn, which is probably a fingering weight, but if the hat pattern (I didn't look at it, sorry) calls for worsted, you probably do have an amazingly small hat.

The 'sock' yarn is not for the hat. I am using worsted weight for the hat and still it seems little.

I guess I'll try to cast on 67 as Indigo73 suggested and see how that goes.

I'm just trying to figure out what to do with the lighter weight yarn - since it's feltable I'm kind of at a loss. Maybe a few little coin purses? Anyone have a simple pattern?

Feltable doesn't mean you have to felt it. It just means you need to be careful when you wash it or it will felt.

Self striping yarn looks best on smaller scale items. Mitts, socks, slippers...

A coin purse could be just a knitted rectangle sewn up each side with a zipper or flap and button.

These are cute felted ones.
