So my 3.5 year DS has been narrating his life lately and it is just hilarious! For example he will jump on the chair while yelling "I want a snack!" and after he says "I want a snack" he narrates "I yelled while jumping on the chair" I love 3.5 year old stuff! Anyone else have a little narrator?Mothering › Forums › Parenting › Ages and Stages › The Childhood Years › Funny! 3.5 year old narrates his actions-anyone else?

Yep! He also sometimes says what he's going to do before he does it, even if it's something he might not want me to know. The other day he was in a bad mood and while I took DD out of the bath, he said, "When it's my turn to get out, I'm not going to get out." It was great because it gave me time to formulate a plan. Hey buddy, next time you hatch an evil plot, don't monologue about it first! Hehehe.

My DD began doing this when she was just over two. Now that she is almost 3 her narratives have gotten quite long and often turn into fictional stories.
Sometimes in the first person, sometimes third.
She is soooo different from my older DS.
He didn't really begin imaginative play until he was almost 5, and seemed to actually learn it from her. She was born when he was 4.5 and began obvious imaginative play when she was about 6 months old. She would sit in the sling and pretend to eat something out of the locket that I always wore.
I didn't know what to make of it at first since I had not witnessed any real imaginative play until then.
Crazy how different kids can be from one another.

Yes. I love this. Since she was about 3, my daughter has contemporaneously narrated many of her actions as if she is reading a screenplay. "... as she walked carefully along the rock wall, she considered jumping off to the side." "And she twirled gracefully across the floor." Just talking to herself.

My 4 year-old has narrated everything in the 3rd person from as long as I can remember -- with no signs of relenting. When she plays engineer, she walks around saying, "The Engineer said, "the caboose is ready to leave." She has started punctuating the ongoing narration with song. It's like living in a musical theater.
