He fell!

I feel horrible!

I left him propped up on the Boppy about 12 inches back from the edge of the futon to go heat up his breakfast and grab some clothes to get dressed. He was screaming, so I was trying to hurry. Then I heard the screaming stop and I figured he'd found his fists to suck on, but it started again a few seconds later. I came back into the room (was gone maybe 90 seconds), and he was on the floor.

ETA - no apparent injuries, although I couldn't really check him while he was screaming... I nursed him to sleep though and I don't see anything.

I think that every single mom out there goes through this at least once.
That said - you are not a horrible mom, this happens! Babies are a lot tougher than they look, so be brave!

Watch for any swelling on the head, lethargy or other signs that something is off - in those cases, go to the ER and call doctor immediately.

IT was recommended to keep babies awake, for 40-60 min. after the fall, but I am not 100% sure, I have to check if that's the case for babies this small.

Hang in there!!!!

I'm so sorry!! I'm sure you feel awful, but it *was* an accident. It's scary how much they manage to move, even though they aren't truly mobile yet. I'll have to remember that next time I put my LO on the futon for a second...

I, too have done something similar so don't feel bad. I put Sarah up on her boppy on the floor for tummy time. I went into the kitchen which you can clearly see straight through to the living room and when I turned around she was on her face "sucking carpet". I know it is an awful feeling and I instantly felt like I had accidentally "smothered" her but she was fine. A bit fussy and I know to never walk off again when she is on her boppy or at tummy time but it does happen. I am a second time around mom and it happens to the best of us. Hugs to you mama for checking your beautiful boy and loving him through his "ordeal". It is ok. We won't judge here because everyone of us has had something happen similar to this or...God Forbid...(hand over mouth) worse! They are so young that we often think "they are not really mobile yet" and it can lure us into a false sense of security. My DH admitted to turning around from the kitchen and realizing Sarah was about to tumble off the couch on to the floor. We are human and as one previous poster put it, babies really are sturdier than we think.

Yup. My first fell too. He actually got a cut when it happened though. My husband and I blame the other person. Like to this day. LOL! Take heart, mama. You're not a bad mom. Just a human one.

I think they all fall at some point. I let my first fall off the kitchen counter when she was an infant! I put her on the changing table thingy up there. On her back; she couldn't roll or crawl or anything yet. But she could push with her feet... In the seconds my back was turned to wet a washcloth, she pushed herself backward, off the counter, flipped in the air and landed on her face. Ouch. She was fine.

Each of my kids has fallen off the bed at some point. We cosleep and don't have the mattress on the floor and it has happened. I teach them as soon as they can crawl how to scoot off the bed backwards, but there's always before that!

Do not beat yourself up for it. Babies are really tough!

Ian fell out of his carseat when he was 6 weeks old.

Connor was maybe 2 weeks old when my neighbor was holding him and fell down the stairs.

Gavin just had his first incident this morning...it was the dog.

All are fine!!

With Ian, I had set him in his carseat so I could go to the bathroom (it was just the closest thing to me when I got up). He started fussing. My husband picked up the carseat to sway it to settle him. Ian wasn't strapped in, and the handle wasn't locked into place, so it dumped him out. AND, we had concrete floors at the time, not even carpet!

Connor's fall was purely an accident, the neighbor just tripped coming down the stairs. He shielded Connor really well (his own hip took a beating, though, he had a big bruise!) and Connor didn't even cry!

Gavin was just this morning...I was leaving for work, so I went in to kiss my hubby and Gavin who were sleeping together on the bed. The great dane followed me in and jumped up on the bed (she often sleeps on the bed) but she's a klutz, her paw got stuck in the comforter and she tried to jump off. Somehow in the process she stepped on the baby, and he got scratched by her claws

ALL of them are fine. And it's jsut the beginning of so many injuries to come!!

yep, the dog jumped on ada's face just the other day. man, it took a second...her face melted...and then the really sad cry.

i think all babies fall off something at some point. you kind of just have to cross your fingers and wait for it to happen, i think.
