Using both cloth AND disposables - questions

Have any of you used cloth majority of the time and used disposables for trips, outings, etc? How does that work out for the baby's skin? I will probably use disposables as seldom as possible, but want to know if switching back & forth will have any negative reactions, sensitivities, etc... may be a "depends on each individual baby's skin" type of question, I'm totally new at this! I've read MDC for years now, but now that I'm actually going to be putting the info to work, I'm full of even more questions! So, please go ahead and tell me in a "diapering for dummies" way if you want, its allll appreciated.

We had a few long trips (3+ weeks) and lots of moves early on in my DD's life, and she went back and forth from disposables to cloth with no problems. I do think it depends on each individual baby's skin, though.

Depends on the brand of sposie and how long she sits in it. The Nature Babycare don't seem to cause much of a problem with rash. But I had her sleeping in a Huggie for 6 hours during an overnight plane flight and her poor little tush looked just awful afterward - took 3 days in cloth to clear that.

I think rash problems are really really individual though - it totally depends on your particular baby's skin.

That's what we did. My dd had no problems in sposies.

We switch back and forth all the time and we have never had a problem. She actually gets slightly rashier in cloth.

We use both and never noticed a problem with disposables. More frequent rashes with cloth, actually, so we just change more frequently.

I never had rash problems with either disposables or cloth diapers. My kids had the occasional rash due to "not changing a poopy diaper once and then the baby's skin was extra sensitive for the next week or so". But I never found that the diaper choice made much difference in healing rashes- the key was to change diapers frequently, wash gently but thoroughly after poops (in the sink works better than with baby wipes), and avoid using any creams or powders that the baby was sensitive to.

We have gone back & forth a fair bit thanks to moving 3 times & some travelling. Ds rarely gets diaper rash in any diaper but occassionally if it sits too long he will & then I actually do use a disposable for a half day or so because I can really slop on the butt cream with no worries about ruining a diaper & it clears the rash up quicker.

With my twins, we used cloth 100% at first, but by 5 months we were planning a long trip and decided to use disposibles for the trip. We were surprised by the expense, but we had no problems. After awhile, we started using disposibles at night because it ment we didn't have to change diapers at night, and because if we left cloth on all night the smell of ammonia in the morning diaper was terrible.

With my daughter, I used disposibles at night from day one. I use disposibles if I'm going to be away from the house and carrying a diaper bag would be inconvient (like the zoo or museum, more than 2 hour events).

We currently use about 2 diapers a day. One is the nighttime diaper for my 4 year old son not night trained, and the other is my daughters night time diaper, who is also not night trained. She is working on day training of her own accord, so we use very few cloth diapers, too.

We have never had any problems with rashes, or other problems from disposible diapers. I have never bought pricey disposibles, either. We have only had difficulty with rashes when my boys were small enough to poop in their diapers but old enough to try to hide it.

Thank you all.

I exclusively use cloth diapers(mostly pockets) on my almost 2 year old and her dad uses disposables on her when he has her 2nights and 1 day a week. It works out fine. No adverse reactions. He just started doing this about a month ago or so and before that we both used her cloth. He's never been a huge fan of cloth so he started buying her disposables a while back and while it doesn't thrill me, that's his choice and his wallet so it's his decision. She doesn't seem to notice really but she does like having her "bug diaper" on and will choose it if it's available.

We use sposies at night to avoid a change ... we use Earth's Best and have had no rashes. During the day we use cloth, and also haven't had any rashes. For what it's worth, we don't use any creams or lotions or wipes ... just a cloth wipe with warm water.
We've also used the sposies on longer trips with no problems ... the only thing I've noticed is that her pants seem loose with all that extra room from the slimness of the sposies versus the bulk of her cloth ones.

I use a sposie at night for ds. He just pees too much and he wakes up when he feels wet. So, to get a nice long period of sleep for all, he's in a sposie.

I lost my travel wetbag (no idea where it went), but I use sposies when we are going to be out & about. If visiting someone's home, I might use cloth if I had my wetbag. The only issue is poopy diapers. Ds makes stinkers and the wetbag didn't really seal in the smell.

switching back and forth for trips etc never was a problem for my DC.

I haven't had any trouble switching back and forth. DS1 has to use disposables at preschool (he's three, but non verbal and is in the public school preschool). We also use disposables at night for both boys and during naps on weekend for DS1. We also use them when we travel. Ok, that sounds like a lot of disposables, but I really do use cloth about half the time. Pampers seem to irritate DS1's butt, but we haven't had any problems with other brands.
