Borax?

Hi there - so I have finally found a laundry system that seems to be working for us. For six months now, I have been battling serious ammonia stink issues and I've tried everything in the book. Boiling in water with Calgon is the only stripping method that will get rid of our stink, and adding Calgon to our regular washes helps to keep it away, but it always comes back... Finally I tried adding Borax and what a difference! My dipes don't smell AT ALL even when they are wet. I mean they smell like NOTHING. And they are so clean. It also seems to help with rinsing - I only need to rinse twice now to get rid of all the bubbles instead of the 3 or even 4 times that I used to do. It's been a month now and I really think I might have found my solution. I have been using about 1/4 c of Borax, about 1/8 c of Calgon and about 2 tbs of liquid Nature Clean in a hot water wash followed by two cold rinses. I have a newish HE FL machine and we have hard well water. DS poops in a potty so it's only pee diapers.

So now here's the million dollar question - how terrible is Borax? I've read that it is naturally occurring and relatively safe from an environmental perspective but what is it going to do to my diapers? Will they smell fresh but leak everywhere in a few weeks? My stash is all typical AIOs - PUL, microfiber and fleece.

Thanks!
