I simply say, "Breastfeeding is about more than nutrition." If the person asks questions or continues to state their opinions then I will go in to all the great reasons to bf: soothe/comfort hurt or tired child, protection from illness, world health org. recommends it, etc.
This really seems to be the misconception, that bf'ing is only about providing nutrition until something else can be given: formula, solids. Right? And until I had my own kids, I thought this, too.
What irks me is the number of medical professionals I have run into who believe bf'ing is only nutritional. Had a dr. just the other day look my 1 y.o. up and down and say, "he's healthy, he doesn't need it."
I then invited him to come to my house in the middle of the night and see if he could find something to soothe my son back to sleep. He changed the subject.

I would have loved to have seen that!
