When do they understand the concept of counting? - Page 2

Just wanted to post in case there are any other "late" counters or number recognizers out there. Whenever a thread like this is posted, I mostly see the early development posted and rarely the "late" ones....

Micah will be 32 months tomorrow. He has not been too terribly interested in numbers as a whole. He knows that he is "two!" years old, when you ask how old he is, and if you tell him to count (like before jumping off the bed or counting the number of objects) he will generally say "3, 4, 5!" (and then comes 6, 8, 9, 10, I think). I don't think I have heard the child say "one" more than once.. Ever. If you just ask "How many <insert objects> are there?", he will ALWAYS answer "Two!"

It's just not something important to him. He has classified things by color for a while now, can recognize all of the letters -- a lot of those with word associations based on the first letter of the word, and loves animals and their sounds.

Every child learns differently, I just wanted to add the other end of the spectrum

she's definitely understood the concept of "two" for quite awhile. she was probably 16-18 months when she started consistently understanding/saying things like "one binky, two binkies" or "one cookie, two cookies." it took longer for her to understand 3.

she is 2.5.

DS understood 2 (as in two objects) before he was very verbal, likely because he would say "more" or "another one" and I would say "you want 2?" This was around 14/15 months old.

One-to-one also correspondence came pretty early here - somewhere around 22 months old. At 24 months, he consistently identifies groups of objects up to 4. He understands the concept of counting one object per number (and knows the sequence of numbers up to around 20), but starts forgetting what he has counted already somewhere around 6.

DD could count to 4 at 14mos. She would point to things and count them. Now at 22 mos she can identify numbers, but doesn't count out loud much. She doesn't like being a trick pony, being told to display her skills. She's funny like that.

I wish I could take credit. I read it somewhere, at some point so far in the past I can't remember when or where, and shamelessly co-opted it.

I can't think of anything witty for its and it's.
