dogs: chapter books for canine-obsessed 6yo?

we've read 101 Dalmatians, and Ribsy by Beverly Cleary, and now i'm drawing a blank.

the other dog books i know--Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows--are much too sad. definitely for an older child.

i think i will look at Shiloh, but from the book jacket it seemed very sad, too.

longer picture book ideas, such as the James Herriot stories, would also be welcome.

Cricket in Times Square has a cool dog.

The Bunnicula books are narrated by a dog.

The Incredible Journey...

James Herriot's Treasury for Children. I haven't read this, so don't know if there are any stories that are too sad, but you could check it out and see.

I'm trying to think...but all the dog stories I can think of have sad endings.

I loved these as a kid and they all had happy endings, even though the characters do go through a lot to get there LOL

"Lassie Come Home" by Eric Knight

"Big Red" by Jim Kjelgaard

"The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Burnford

Oh I forgot: My dd recently enjoyed

"Balto and the Great Race" (a true story) by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel

The James Herriott Treasury for Children is great, and I don't think it's too sad.

Lad: A Dog is OK. There are also eight million Animal Ark books, all with happy conclusions, and many are about dogs. The Puppy Place series is also all doggie, all the time!

There's Because of Winn-Dixie, but that might be kind of boring to a six-year-old.

A couple my kids have liked that you probably won't be able to find:
Shadow the Sheepdog by Enid Blyton
Jed, the Shepherd's Dog by Agnes Sligh Turnbull

a couple of short chapter books:
Little Dog Lost by Rene Guillot
The Comeback Dog by Jane Resh Thomas

We have Star in the Storm sitting around, and I think my 6 year old would like it, but I haven't tried reading it to her yet. When I was 6, I loved books by Albert Payson Terhune (Lad: a Dog, etc.) but I suspect not all 6 year olds would. When I tried one on DD, she found it a little hard to follow, but that might have been when she was 5. I've been thinking I should try again.

For a longer picture book, there's an abridged version of Lassie Come-Home by Rosemary Wells.

The Puppy Place series and the Hank the Cowdog series (although the dialect in the Hank series bugs me a little.)
