potty seat strike?

Hey there EC mamas - I am new to these boards, I heard this was a good place for getting advice about EC issues.

I have been doing part time EC with my son since about 5 months. I started off giving him potty chances after naptimes and on waking up in the morning, and whenever he had poop cues (his pee cues are hard to notice). I would hold him aloft over the toilet or else let him sit on a bjorn little potty on top of our toilet. This went along great - he stopped pooping in his diapers within about 2 weeks and he did pee in the potty quite often although he still wore diapers most of the time and he would wet them pretty often too.

Our problem: Last summer (around 11 months old) we did a lot of traveling without our little potty so I was just holding him over the toilet to go, and when we got home, he wanted nothing more to do with the little potty.

The last 5 months (he is now 16 months old) I have just been going along with him on this, because everything else was going so well. He has been keeping his diapers dry a lot longer, and around 13 months he started signing potty for all his poops and a lot of the time for pees. But the kid is 22 lbs and it's getting heavy to hold him over the potty! He protests very vigorously if I try to put him on the potty or on the toilet seat. He only wants to go if I hold him and lately he often refuses to do it even then. He just learned to walk - maybe that is related?

Anyway, I was hoping some of you seasoned EC-ers could give me advice on potty strikes and how to transition him back to using a potty seat instead of being held every time.

Thanks mamas!

Just a quick thought

Have you tried having him stand/squat on the toilet seat facing the cistern and pee in the toilet from there? My dd did that for a while when she was refusing to sit.

We're having similar issues, except add in that if I put him anywhere NEAR the toilet he's trying to play with the lid. (And I can't take the lid off because we lock that to keep him from playing in it! )

Thanks for your replies, ladies! It makes me feel better to see I am not the only one who has experienced this!

Orangefoot I will try getting him to stand - so far no dice but I will keep trying. I guess I will keep offering the potty seat as well even though it usually results in ardent resistance.

We don't have a toilet lock, since our whole bathroom is gated off to him as that's where the litterbox lives. Now that he is walking I'm not sure how to make the bathroom accessible to him without giving him free access to cat turds... maybe I will just start keeping the little potty in our main living space so he can approach it on his own terms.
