Teething already!?! :(

DS will be 4 mo. in 1 week and I swear he's began teething this week. Is that really possible? I want his gummy smile to stay!

He's never been the best sleeper (up every 2-3 hrs at night with maybe his first stretch being 3-4 hours), but over the past week or so even that has gone south. An example of a usual night this week?
-Down at 7:30/8:00. Up at 9:45. Up again around 12, around 2, then 3, 4, 5, and up at 6:30 for the day, only going about 45 min.sometimes during those last few stretches. He's not staying awake, but I know he's not getting restful sleep and getting through all the stages.

I posted about this in the nighttime parenting section as I'm exhausted with DH working long days and being no help b/c he leaves before DS is up and gets home after he's asleep, but this is such a horrible time to add even worse sleep issues than what we had. More so, I just feel awful for him b/c I can tell he's not himself.

He's not as "talkative" and smiley, doesn't look at you/engage as much, constantly has his hands in his mouth with his fingers rubbing his gums almost, chewing on my shirts, etc. Also, b/c he's night sleeping well he's cranky most of the day and within an hour of getting up this morning DESPERATELY needed a nap and passed out in the Moby within minutes (usually he fusses for awhile before falling asleep). Poor thing woke up with dark circles under his eyes

Sorry this got so long... what do you think? Teething boy or something else? He does have reflux but he's on meds (which I hated to do, but it was awful) and those are helpful so now it's mostly normal spit up and he's not in pain when eating. So far I have "Sophie", who he LOVES to chomp on, I have amber teething necklaces on order, and Highlands Teething Tablets, but he's so young/little that I am afraid to give him too many of those, though I do think they tend to help him sleep better. It says you can only give them 4 times per day anyway and not to continue after 7 days - babies teeth A LOT longer than 7 days, so what's up with that?

Anything else I can do to help him feel better and get more rest so we're both happier???

Totally possible!! Both mone got teeth at 4 months. DD had 8 teeth by 9 months!

ALso, needing a nap that quickly in the am is pretty typical. At 10onths we stretch it to about 2.5-3 hours after getting up.

Sounds like our house recently! DD is 5mo and we finally see some white coming through! You can do it! It will get better.

We went through our first bout of teething at 3 mos. It was about what you describe - totally awful. At that age, DS couldn't even reliably get Sophie or any other teether toy into his mouth and usually ended up poking himself in the eye with them which didn't help. I swore he was going to eat his hand right off. His cheek and bum rashes were gruesome. He wore a "bois d'orignal" necklace (more common here than amber) and loved those rasberry-shaped pacifier type things. I also rolled up wash cloths, dipped 1/2 of the roll in water and then froze them (dipping only 1/2 leaves one end not as cold for holding). That's about all I could do, I really felt helpless and it was hard to see him so miserable.

Thankfully, that was our only phase of teething. It lasted about two weeks and he has never shown any teething discomfort since. Funny thing is, his first four teeth weren't visible till 8 mos but he sure could feel them down there a lot earlier. He only just got a fifth tooth at 12 mos.

Hopefully the worst will soon be over for your LO.

My DD started teething at 3 months and had her first two teeth at 5 months. She is now 10 months and has 8 teeth with two more on the way. It gets better once they can figure out how to put things in their mouths and when they are more mobile so they are more distracted from the pain!

definitely possible
my son got his first tooth at 3 months, much to my shock.

hang in there!

My DD got her first tooth at 2.5 months. She has a nice set of 4 pearly whites on top and 4 on bottom (she's 9 months).

The key is finding teethers that are light weight and easy to handle. Sophie the Giraffe, and the cornstarch hand-shaped teething rattles were awesome for when our DD was little (and she still loves to chomp on them even today).

My ds2 is 4 mo today and it's like you are describing him exactly. Thankfully he is napping now, but I think we were up like 7 times last night. Ugh.

I'm thinking about getting an amber necklace, but haven't yet.

Good luck!

It's totally possible. They can teethe for months before they actually get teeth (sorry). DD started around the same age and didn't get teeth until 8.5mo. With DD, Hyland's teething tablets helped her most of all, and we also liked our amber teething necklace.

DD had her first teeth at 4 months on the dot. Now, at 10 months, she has 7 with the 8th on the verge of coming through. Her back gums are starting to swell as well so I think her molars are coming in as well. It can be rough! Hang in there. Homeopathics, amber necklaces and the occasional dose of tylenol are all very helpful!

Yes possible, yes it sucks.

Just try different things until you find something he likes to chomp on. Cold/frozen things are often a hit. My girl usually is satisfied with either a frozen teether, or an ice cube wrapped in a cloth.

Also second that you CAN use some infant tylenol at night if the baby is too miserable to sleep. Call your ped. for dosage amount if you're not sure.

Thanks everyone! After reading the responses here and watching him for a few more days, I think it's official. He's an early teether!

I froze some washcloths, but after a few seconds I think he realizes they are just too chilly. There is a thing you can freeze made by the same company that makes Sophie that I plan to order since I don't really want him chewing on plastic.

We've been doing the Highland's tablets and those seem to help a bit as well when we do them 4x a day (every 6 hrs) like the bottle says.

Did anyone use those long term? I mean, how long can I give him those day after day?

My youngest two both had a tooth at 3.5 months. All I could think was "no fair." I don't know about long-term usage of homeopathic remedies, but my *guess* would be that it's okay. Here is a helpful link: http://www.hylands.com/news/teethinginfo.php

I wonder if you can try putting Sophie in the fridge?

Yes, it is possible...my daughter got her 1st tooth a week before she turned 3 months old...then a 2nd one shortly after.

my son started teething right after turning 3 months old, it's a bit rough at times. We have been using the Hylands tablets for a few weeks now along with the gel on a teething pacifier.
