Help for a friend...

Thread Starter
Hello,
Sorry guys and gals, its been a long time...
A friend of mine needs some reassurance and I have told her I would be VERY cautious bringing her son to the doctor too soon...
Reminded her that if the doc needs to do a culture, he doesn't need to retract her son's foreskin.
Her son had small red dots all over his penis two days ago... she used a bit of A&D and said the 'rash' seemed to go away... but today his entire penis is bright red.. she said red like an apple from the tip to the base.
I told her it sounds like it may be Candida-yeast, and to feed her son (20 mos) yogurt and to get plain yogurt to use as a topical in place of diaper cream (which I said I personally wouldn't use).
She knows all about not retracting.. not even a little bit, as well, the home daycare provider has been told to never retract. My friend is confident there has been no trauma to his penis/foreskin.
One last thing-I told her if it does end up being a yeast infection/she HAS to go to bring her son to the doctor, she should ask for diflucan...nystatin, in my experience w/rash on my breasts/ thrush in my babes mouth, doesn't seem to work-it was a frustrating waste of time.
Anyway... anyone kno what else this could be? common problems you've had or heard of? (There is also separation trauma... I'll have to mention that-although that shouldn't create red spots.. but may have lent to him being irritated and causing some synechia separation...)..
thanks all! (I'm going to direct her attention to this thread/this forum now...)

From your description I dont think it is seperation but yeast. She can always use OTC 7 day monistate and if it is yeast she will see improvement within a day. If it isnt yeast the monistate wont make a difference and a culture should be done to identify if there is bacteria present then treat that. OTC bacatracin wil work on bacteria infections so if she wants to try that first before the culture then she can.

Here is a thread with more information on possible causes and what to do or not do http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732

I agree that it sounds like yeast. Another possibility though is an allergic rash. If she has recently changed detergents or brands of sposies or such, that could be the cause. It might appear first on the penis b/c it is very sensitive skin.

If it is yeast, switching to sposies while clearing it up and stripping the cloth is a good idea.

Naked time to let everything air out is also really good for these kinds of issues.

My son is 17 months now. I used cloth diapers on my 2 older daughters and just assumed I'd do the same with him. Wrong! I cannot put him in cloth without him getting a red prickly rash that turns into blotches of red and then just solid red, slightly raised rash. He'd be a week in dispposables getting over a rash he'd get in one day of cloth.

Generally, it would reslove with frequent applications of diaper cream. I use Weleda and Burts Bees usually.

When he was very small, he got what my doctor thought was a yeast infection. She suggested using Lotrimin if I recall correctly. She said about a third of the yeast out there is resistant to Monistat.

I think just airing out the diaper area is very helpful too!
