How late did your toddler start walking?

DS2 is 13 months, and does not look remotly ready to walk. His brother seemed more ready earlier, and was walking by now. I know every child is different. DS2 actually has been sleeping like utter crap lately, so I am guessing that means a milestone is right around the corner. But I was just curious. Barring any medical issues, how late did some of the toddlers out there take their first steps?

I think its probably important to also note my son still does not crawl. He has JUST started getting on all fours and attempting something, but usualy just flips over to his butt and does the butt-scootin-boogey. Its really hysterical to watch.

DS walked independently at 17 months. He crawled at 8-9 months and cruisng around 9-10 months. Until 17 months, he was perfectly content to "walk" around holding on to something or to someone's hand, but the second we let go, he would sit down. He never stood independently until the day before he started walking. When he started, he never tripped or fell since he had had so much practice walking while holding onto our hand/pinky/whatever.

Dd didn't walk until 15-16 months. She was content to scoot and cruise for months. She started cruising at 8 months and was crawling at 7 months.

My first walked at 15 months, my second at 13 months and my 3rd at just almost 18 months. With my 3rd we were actually starting to get a little concerned, but honestly I think he *could* have walked a lot sooner if he wanted to. He was content to walk around holding our hands, but had no desire to walk on his own and would sit down as soon as you let go. When he finally did walk he barely fell down at all. Within days of walking independently he was running

DS1 - 10 months, exactly. And it wasn't just a step here or there. He took his first steps in the morning, and was literally running by bedtime

DD - 16 months

DS2-15 months, 14 months adjusted age (preterm)

Yea, I am not to worried, as he will walk holding out hands and walk along furniture and what not. And he has stood for a second on his own, but will immediately sit down and begin to scoot. Hes been scooting since about 7 or8 months.

DD didn't crawl until the week after her 1st birthday then did it perfectly (like cartoon babies crawl).

She didn't walk by herself until just after she turned 16m & within a week she was FAST! She didn't take many spills once she decided she was ready to do it herself I think b/c she spent almost 6m holding on.

DD1 was 12 months.

DD2 was 15 months.

DS was 17 1/2 months.

FWIW, DD2 and DS never crawled, either. They were butt scooters.

I posted about this a few weeks ago too. LOL. DD didn't start walking independently until the day before Thanksgiving this year. She was a week away from being 19 months. She crawled though and ran on her knees and lots of knee walking before this.

One day he's going to get up and just start walking when you least expect it.

Thats what I was thinking. His brother was so gradual, and very wabbly. Each day he got better and better at it. And like I said, DS has been sleeping like CRAP lately, so perhaps hes working on it.

Anything up to 2yrs old is within the normal range, they don't even refer for possible investigation until at least 18 months where I live (& that's only because the wait after that to see an expert is several months).

DC have a 2nd cousin who didn't walk until something like 21 months -- he's 7yo now and runs around as well as any other boy can.

My DC all walked 9-11 months. It's a nuisance, I envy ppl with late walking toddlers!

DD walked at 18 months. Walks well, no staggering.

She went from crawling to walking. Bam. It's like she wanted to master it before trying.

Hiya Gina! I've been wanting to post a similar thread. Annie is 13 months and seems perfectly content crawling. She'll walk holding onto furniture or holding our hands. DH and I try to get her to walk back and forth between us, but no go.

Almost all of the toddlers (10 months-16 months) in her Gymboree class are walking so I get worried she might be behind. But threads like these reassure me, and even then it's not a rush. I just have to keep telling myself that!

I guess that would explain why DD was taking short naps and not falling asleep until nearly midnight before she started walking on her own. It's so interesting how little minds work.

My almost 15 month old just started last Sunday! and she just TOOK OFF.

DS is 15 months old and has absolutely no interest in walking independently. He walks perfectly fine holding onto our hands, but the second we let go he sits down. He's also not interested in standing independently either, he just falls forward or sits down. He's cruising along furniture so we're not worried.

DD was 12 months, DS was almost 16 months. I was so ready for him to walk because he wanted to crawl everywhere in public places, but didn't want us to hold him. Ewww.

My DD had hip dysplasia, but that was fixed when she was under six months. We had a Jolly Jumper to exercise her legs. She did have to learn to roll over, that she had legs and to use them. She butt scooted only a short time and learned to crawl. At 16 months, DD took a few steps partially around the coffee table one day. On another day, alone, she took about two steps away from it. Within days she stood up up the refrig, walked away and never crawled again.

My friend's DD was unusally unique. She stood at the couch unassisted at seven months, learned to climb onto the couch, and climb onto the back of the couch. She learned she could climb onto everything. One day my friend found her sitting on a telephone stand. We called her a baby mountain goat and had to watch her because you'd never know where you'd find her!

Kids are all unique in their own ways.
